Venus transiting the Sun. The shot was taken at Kos island, Greece. The weather conditions almost ruined my chance to capture this rare astronomical event. After a battle against time and the cloudy sky I was fortunate to take some pictures!

Venus before and during its transit in front of the Sun

Image
Venus before and during transit by fksr, on Flickr

Venus a few minutes after sunset on May 31st, 2012, six days before its transit in front of the sun, and during the transit on June 5th. The two photos are at the same scale, and Venus is approximately at the same place in the frame. In the days before the transit, the Venus crescent was already very narrow, and no longer visible to the naked eye, at least for me.

The left image was shot in San Rafael, California, and the right one in San Francisco.

The Venus Transit on the Heliometer of the Kuffner Observatory in Vienna, Austria. Heliometer measurements of the Venus transits in 1761 and 1769 made significant contributions to the determination of the astronomical unit.

Image

The particular instrument was built in 1891 and is the largest Heliometer worldwide. It was originally used for measuring parallaxes of stars. The divided front lens allows for an accurate determination of angular distances on the sky by measuring its according displacement.

Here's my contribution.

Taken in Austin, Texas right before sunset. Initially thought that clouds would obscure the sunset, but at the last minute, the sun peeked out below the clouds and I got some nice images of the transit. Taken with my Canon T2i, 250mm lens (cropped), no filters, hand-held:

Venus transit and green flashing

http://www.astro.cz/_data/images/news/2 ... 2000px.jpg

When I was waiting for the last Venus transit for next century, I didn't expect I am witnessed by another special and anusual phenomenon - green flash. The specific conditions brought several green flashes during Sun and Venus rising. Spectacular and really such unusual! Used Canon 550D, MTO 1000/10 mm.

Why only one transit when one can have two? :-) Here is my transit of the Hubble Space Telescope in the middle of the transit of Venus, taken from Australia (Queensland)

I finally got my video of the Transit of Venus together. I used two telescopes and two cameras to capture time-lapse sequences of this magnificent astronomical event of 2012. I hope you enjoy it. I had a whole lot of fun planning and executing this shoot.

Contact Venus - Sun Limbo

Posted: Fri Jun 08, 2012 6:47 pm
by Zerjillo
This image captures the exact moment when Venus touches the Sun limbo in its last transit through the Sun (June 6th, 2012).

Please take into account that this image was captured using a small and cheap telescope (Skywatcher ED 80), a 4x Barlow Lens, a color video CCD (IMG-132E) and a Baader solar film filter. Details of the Sun surface are clearly visible.

To get this image we had to fly almost 3000 kms, travel around 500km by car and fight against bad weather in Norway and Sweden.

We are processing many more takes to make big mosaics of the Sun in h-alpha and a small animation of Venus getting out of the Sun. We will post our results in the following days.
