X marks the spot!

The sky is kind enough to shows us signs of the hidden treasures it keeps! Zodiacal light and the Milky Way are met in this interesting X shape and all we have to do is just look up and enjoy. I actually was fooled by the false dawn created from the intense Zodiacal light and didn't expect it to be so bright. The location of the image is Mt Voras at Northern Greece in an altitude of 2134m and it was made with a Canon 350D coupled with an 8mm fisheye lens at f3.5 on a single 30sec exposure.

Tidal Streams in NGC 4216, the members of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster

http://www.irida-observatory.org

Copyright: Velimir Popov, Emil Ivanov

This image was taken during several nights on April, 2013 in remotely controlled IRIDA Observatory. We used our both telescopes: 12"ASA Astrograph + SBIG 11000M CCD and 12"RC Astrograph + ATIK 4000M CCD to obtain 12.5 hours of total exposure time with LRGB filters. The three edge-on galaxies NGC4216 (in the center of the image), NGC4222 (top left) and NGC4206 (bottom right) are members of the Virgo galaxy cluster. In the east of NGC4216 one can find a very faint structure, which is a stellar stream. The edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 4216 is nearly 100 000 light-years across, about the size of our own Milky Way and is about 40 million light-years away.

More information courtesy: The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey. IV. NGC 4216: A Bombarded Spiral in the Virgo Cluster (Sanjaya Paudel, Pierre-Alain Duc, Patrick Cote, Jean-Charles Cuillandre, Laura Ferrarese, Etienne Ferriere, Stephen D. J. Gwyn, J. Christopher Mihos, Bernd Vollmer, Michael L. Balogh, Ray G. Carlberg, Samuel Boissier, Alessandro Boselli, Patrick R. Durrell, Eric Emsellem, Lauren A. MacArthur, Simona Mei, Leo Michel-Dansac, Wim van Driel)

NGC 4216 is a barred spiral galaxy – it is classified as SAB(s)b in the RC3 cataloge (de Vaucouleurs et al. 1991) – located in the outskirts of the Virgo Cluster at an angular distance of 4 degrees from the cluster center, M87. It has an edge-on orientation with an inclination angle i = 85 degree. Its central regions are characterized by a prominent dust lane (Chung et al. 2009) and a red and compact bright nucleus. The galaxy is surrounded by a very diffuse stellar halo, and complex filamentary structures, including streams and plumes.

The most prominent tidal stream F1, East of NGC 4216, has an angular extent of ~12.5 arcmin on the sky, which corresponds to ~60 kpc at the assumed mean distance of the cluster, 16.5 Mpc (Mei et al. 2007). The filament starts from the South-East corner of NGC 4216 and near its easternmost tip it makes a sudden turn towards the West-North with an angle of about 120 degree. Although further away it gets lost within the halo of a bright red star, when it emerges again, it seems to join the F2 the second longest filament in the field, North of NGC 4216.

Thank you for looking ...

I am a amateur astrophotograph fron Valencia (Spain).
LBN 552 is a brown dust cloud in Cepheus. Its fantasmagoric looking make it´s known by Daemons Dance.
Inside of it there is a molecular gas nebula named Cohen 129.
I took this picture from the CAAT (http://www.astroava.org/index.php/caat.html) in Aras de lo Olmos (from 70 Km Valencia city), with a Takahasi FSQ106, Atik 383 (30x600 seg) for luminance, and Canon 55d cooled DSRL (50x300 seg) for RGB.

Here is an image obtained on Sep 10th of the unusual ring galaxy NGC 1291 in Eridanus. It may well be the closest and brightest ring galaxy to us at 33 million light years away and 10th magnitude. The outer ring of material is much fainter than 10th mag though.

Taken at Cannon Beach, Oregon September 9, 2013. The foreground rock spires
are called "The Needles", south of Haystack Rock. Cannon Beach is about 28
miles south of the entrance of the Columbia River on the Oregon north coast.
Note the reflections of both the crescent moon and Venus in the foreground
tide pools at low time.

The nebula is the glowing remain of the outer hydrogen shell, shed off from a red super-giant sun and exposing its helium burning center, which is called a Wolf-Rayet star. Strong stellar winds from the star compressed and stimulated the surrounding gas and dust, and the strong ultra violett radiation excited it to glow.
