Jupiter was occulted by the moon tonight, here is the view from Perth, WA, Australia just after first contact.

Hello all,

No matter how much you plan and prepare, sometimes you just have to be very lucky.

I had my camera imaging The Moon and Jupiter occultation through my telescope at about 10 second intervals when I noticed the lights from a plane close to the moon. I realised that there was a chance that it would pass in front of the moon, so I quickly canceled the remote timer I was using to take the shots and instead started shooting high speed continuous frames. I managed to get this plane crossing the moon in five individual frames just as Jupiter was about to be occulted by The Moon.

This is a two image composite. The Moon, Jupiter and the plane are all one single image. I then took an overexposed image to bring up the Galilean Moons of (from left to right) Io, Callisto and Europa. Ganymede had already been occulted by The Moon.

Moon, Jupiter and Pleiades

Yesterday evening there was a nice encounter of Moon and Jupiter in the Taurus constellation; the image shows Moon, Jupiter with two moons, Europa on the left and Ganymede on the right, and Pleiades on top right.
Shot taken at 18 Feb 2013 18:14 UTC, from Melegnano, Italy (coordinates 45.348300N, 9.304647E): the sky was clear but, because of air and light pollution, faint stars and nebulosity can't be seen.
The result is a combination of two pictures; both pictures taken with a normal tripod with the following camera data:

The hungarian zodiacal light above Zselic

Zselic perhaps the darkest place of Hungary. The Milky Way roar above this place. Early February, so I was curious to here how nice the zodiacal light. I was not disappointed. An average person would be too conspicuous.

This image consists of four small picture. The individual images were made on 18mm 60 second exposure time at ISO1600. Shooting while hoping that I do not get the foxes fighting. )

Believe it or not asteroids along with airplanes and satellites are flying over our heads every minute of every day. We just don’t pay much attention to them until they accidentally land on top of our houses!

Seeing these objects are pretty much a nightly occurrence when you’re imaging the sky. These are actually noise sources for the imager that have to be cleaned up in order to produce a good looking image.

This first animation is an asteroid that I caught last night. The angular distance from edge to edge of this animation is about 4/10ths of a degree which in practical terms is the sky obstructed by a pencil width at arm’s length. (Your little finger at arm’s length obscures 1 degree). This animation encompasses a time frame of five hours (30 frames @ 10 minutes each).
