The Milky Way over Aristarchos Telescope at the top of Chelmos Mountain
in Achaia, Kalavryta, Greece, at an altitude of 2340m/7677ft.
I took this shot in a moonless night on July 18th, 2012, around midnight.
The location has been measured as one of the darkest areas both in Greece and in Europe and i wanted
the best possible conditions to capture the Milky Way. When i reached the top i saw the most amazing sky.
I was standing in awe. Truly breathtaking.

The Telescope:
Named after Aristarchos of Samos, the first reported person to propose a heliocentric model of the solar system,
the 2.3m Greek telescope, with a focal ratio f/8, is the pride of the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAA)
of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), and the largest telescope in southeastern Europe.

Collinder 399 - The Coat Hanger / Brocchi's Cluster

Copyright: Anthony Ayiomamitis Collinder 399 is one of the best known asterisms in the northern hemisphere summer sky. Although there is some ambiguity as to whether the member stars are physically related or not, their appearance reminds the observer of an upside-down coathanger and, hence, for its nickname (along with Brocchi's Cluster).

Collinder 399 lies in a very rich part of the sky and makes for a very dramatic result when the conditions are optimal for imaging. Cr 399 lies 420 light-years away and is dominated by two red stars forming the hook of the coathanger whereas younger bluish stars form its backbone.

Pismis 24 and NGC 6357

This image covers the central part of the large nebula NGC 6357, also known as the 'Lobster' or 'War and Peace' nebula. The nebula itself appears intensely red, a striking contrast to most emission nebulae which are somewhat more magenta.
At the center of the nebula lies a small star cluster Pismis 24 containing some of the heaviest stars known. The intense ultraviolet radiation from these stars is slowly eroding the surrounding gas and dust away and shaping the delicate structures visible throughout the region. The heaviest of these stars, designated Pismis 24-1, was long thought to weigh some 200 to 300 solar masses, well in excess of the theoretical upper mass limit of about 150 solar masses for an individual star. But in 2006 high-resolution images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope showed that Pismis 24-1 is really two stars orbiting one another. Further to this, ground-based spectroscopic studies have revealed one of the stars to be a tight binary. Still, these three stars are among the heaviest known.
The cluster and nebula lies 8000 light years away in the constellation Scorpius.

The central part of the nebula near Pismis 24 is very bright and I managed to get some fairly good resolution in that area so I made this comparison with images from La Silla and the Hubble Space Telescope. Interestingly, this image taken with a 10" telescope is really not much behind the ESO La Silla image that was taken with the Danish 1.5 metre telescope. The Hubble view is of course another story, but a fun comparison still.

The Atmosphere of Venus

The atmospheric arc of Venus taken during its transit ingress on June 5 at 22:30UT from Australia (Queensland):

The full ingress sequence: At the beginning, the arc is visible only over the north pole of Venus. The reason why it is brighter over the poles is unknown.

And the full arc 25 hours after the transit with Venus at 1.9° from the Sun:
