This image shows the core region of the Rho Ophiuchi Complex, centered around the prominent blue reflection nebula IC 4603. This is one of the nearest star forming regions and the intricacies of the dense interstellar dust clouds in the area provides a spectacular display of light and colours.
The bright star is 7.9 magnitude SAO184376 which is the main source of light for the blue reflection nebula. The contrasting red areas towards the top are primarily due to reflected light from the hearby red giant star Antares, which lies outside the field of view. The entire area is also littered with hundreds of dim reddish stars, which are typically very young T Tauri stars.

Regards,
Rolf

NGC 4151 (or Eye of Sauron) is an intermediate spiral Seyfert galaxy located 43 million light years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici, discovered by William Herschel on March 17, 1787. It is one of the nearest galaxies to Earth to contain an actively-growing supermassive black hole. (Information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_4151

Barnard 86 is a dense molecular cloud visible as a prominent dark patch in the direction toward the galactic centre. Next to it lies the brilliant young cluster NGC 6520. It most likely condensed out of this cloud only a few million years ago. Also visible is the heavily obscured globular cluster Djorg 2 near the left edge of the image.
The background is a rich blanket of tens of thousands of stars in the Milky Way's central bulge. Among them a couple of deep red carbon stars stand out, for example one half way between Barnard 86 and Djorg 2.
