No cake, bystander? Or is this in addition to? :ssmile:

Maybe a single malt Scotch cake or a chocolate Scotch whisky cake is in order, hmmm? Which to make, which to make....

I'm amused that that sound file has the foods in alphabetical order.

Actually, donuts go better with beer than hard spirits. Take it from me.

Hmmmmmm, Did you have anything to do with my post count being accidentally reset geckzilla? its funny how it happened only about a week and a half after this post lol Just joking. I am, however, really quite irate about it because I wasn't to far away from getting my own unique tag. I was also thinking of not posting again but I think this forum is quality and wouldn't wanna leave it.

Paul, I'd be happy to share my post count with you if I knew of a way to do so. If enough people pitched in just a few of their posts, you'd be back to where you were in no time!

Thanks owlice, but I wouldn't accept it, I know how hard it is to get your post count up so I wouldn't scrounge of anyone elses hard work. However, I did notice over my absence recently (for my birthday, which I should say thanks to all those who pm'd me, including you owlice to wish me a happy birthday) that there was a bit of a furore over me not being active for a few days. Now if my post count was to be reset because I wasn't on here for about a week I won't be to happy. I know its just a number, but that number gives me priviliges and seperates me from those who have just joined.

With over 400 posts I could have a tad of credibility. but now I'm no different to any other ensign :(.

Paul.

I have an idea, let's set up weekly auction, e.g. +1000 to postcount for $10+ to anyone. All funds raised will be spent for buying asterisk ads all over the net.

Post count is almost completely meaningless. Its only purpose is for forum statistics, which do have some uses. Having a high post count does not mean you get a "unique title" nor does it give you any credibility. Attaining a high post count over a short period of time, however, will make certain the administration pegs you as an inane post spammer.

I don't spam posts.

All i wanted my post count to do was reach 500 so I could change my title from ensign, to something else. Just like you have yours as Ocular Digitator. I don't see how the problem has confined itself to me, and someone knows something, but isn't saying. Fair enough if I had broken the rules, but I haven't received a pm since saying I have, and there is no mention in the rules that if your static (i.e. not on the forum) for a few days to a week that your post count is reset.

Either way, I'll need to start again and there is no point crying over spilt milk. I just want a reason, if anyone has one.

Hmmm... evidence contradicts this.

I can understand Paul's reaction. Asterisk has ranks, as do many other boards, for a reason. (Actually, probably for several reasons.) It's natural to be disappointed if the number representative of one's participation on a board is accidentally reset. If post counts were completely meaningless to people, would this thread exist? (The Zen of message boards; welcome to our kōans! :D)

They're meaningless to me. There are a lot of petty people out there who will use their post count to lord over newcomers. It's completely ridiculous. For that reason I usually hide post counts from visibility entirely. And no, there is no "oh, so and so has 1000 posts, we have to give him a custom title" thing going on. If it happens, it happens. It usually does. Some people would be better off not attracting attention to themselves, though.

Most of the guys on here who have over 1000 posts have been around here for aaaages, and they also know their stuff, most of the post count has probably been amassed by answering questions put to the forum generally by newcomers (like myself) who don't have as good an understanding but-hope-to-someday about space. I wouldn't call it lording over newcomers, but I would say that they are entitled to show of their knowledge. Also as a newcomer I tend to have a bit of respect for people with higher postcounts as it either means they have been around for a longer time than me, or are generally knowledgable about space and can have a say in 99.9% of forums. Some of the threads I go into here I read the first line and think, "what the...." and just go to open space or something. If I have an idea I'll have a go at it.

All im saying is that it took me the best part of a few months to build that post count up. I was proud of it regardless of whether or not you feel its meaningless. After all, this is a community, and the only people who know me as having been a longer part of it are those who have been here and seen me post. A new comer will see me as just another newcomer. I don't like that it happened "by accident" is all.

(Thanks owlice)

Paul.

You're just completely wrong. There are people here with post counts below 10 who know much more than people with over 500. The only way to gain respect is to conduct oneself in a respectable manner. It has absolutely nothing to do with your post count.

Although it could have came across as that, I did not mean to portray that people with low post counts know nothing. I would never underestimate a persons knowledge based on a post count. What I was trying to say is that those with higher post counts have obviously been here longer, and although this does not mean that they have Stephen Hawking like knowledge of the cosmos it is an indicator. I would ask someone with over 1000 posts a question before someone with 10. But this is a forum and any questions asked are asked of all so we need not worry about that.

Sorry If I caused offence to those with low post counts like myself; this is not what I meant to do.
