The Earth is a planet, in a solar system, in a galaxy, in the universe.

It's atmosphere is arguably the most interesting we can observe, involving all sorts of spectacular & intriguing structures. These can be related, to some extent, to some of the events we see unfolding in the atmospheres of other planets in our solar system.

Earth atmosphere photos - whether seen from space or the ground - are quite acceptable in APOD, as far as I'm concerned.

I don't mind the non-astronomy pictures. APOD consistently puts up the coolest pictures and if a few stretch the limits of 'astronomy', that's ok. As stated, perhaps they serve to draw in a few non-astronomy buffs. That would be a bonus.

This point appears in several guises in the thread. Taking that point, my holiday snaps are relevent. Porn is part of the universe. A plain black screen - dark matter. You could argue that anything is relevent.

It is also true that NASA is more then just space.

The real point however, is that the site is called Astronomy picture of the day, and there have been a lot of pictures recently that have no real astronomical connection.

That is the point I was making. It is still my "start" page and will remain so, but I don't feel it unreasonable to post an occasional criticism.

Adrianxw,

I suspect that most people here were responding to Craterchain's spastic outbreak, not your initial post. His post was overly emotional and I think people were taking shots at him for being such a drama queen (for instance no one here wanted to know about his 'chapped ass' problems but I sure hope he finds a cure it just the same).

Adrianxw your post was rather innocuous.

My 2 cents is that you are right in your criticism but this is just one web site out of many with astronomy images. My suggestiong to anyone who needs to get their daily 'astronomy fix' and APOD didn't quite 'deliver the goods' is to go to some of the Mission websites that NASA runs and look for new images from Cassini or the rovers.

Heck I still go and look at old Viking images and even some of the later Apollo images are just plain awesome.

And don't forget that there are tons of local astronomy groups that post up their images as well. Sometimes you find some pretty amazing stuff.

In your opinion, and THAT is the pertinent point on a public forum. Quite clearly, based on other responses, in the opinions of others that's not true.

How many millions of years went by with people (or our predecessors) looking up at the sky with their naked eyes before telescopes and astro cameras were invented? The Grand Majority of all astronomy ever done by humanity looked a lot more like the occasional APOD images of clouds than deep exposures of IC434 or pictures of the rings around Uranus.

Indeed we should be extremely thankful that our forebears saw fit to turn this world into a place where we have time to photograph the clouds and debate photographic content with others online rather than searching for food, carrying water, and fighting off marauders before we die at age 24.

Humility is a virtue.

One of the more inspiring astronomy photos. ANYBODY can shoot a digital photo of a supernova nowadays, but how many can capture the Wrath of God? Oh wait, they're the same thing.

I used to get my late-night laughs from Letterman, now I just check into "Discuss" after ooohing and aaahing over the latest APOD. Much laughing out loud from the entries above.

Today's is a beaut! (02/03/08...sorry, I see the URL box, but can I go back to find it and copy it without losing what I've written here?)

I enjoy this site very much...greatly appreciate you who choose the photos and provide the links and you who ask questions and answer them, and your links too. Thanks for helping the rest of us begin to understand. Am learning a lot...and having fun, too.

Could someone please explain the circles with flashing (or not) pages to the left of each "discuss" subject. They don't seem to relate to whether or not I've read the latest entry. Oops, now that I'm logged-in they look different, but still don't know what they signify.

Non moving pages

means the topic is not yet declared a popular whereas the moving

means it is a popular topic.

The orange versions

and

mean the same as the gray versions except that there are unread posts in those topics.
