Does anyone know what the dark object at the top left of the image is? x=609, y=122.

That object--looks like a AA battery floating in space--was visible in yesterday's POD also! (click on "detailed image" link, the zoomable image, and zoom in a few times.) I sent a note to one of the contact people listed in Hubblesite.com and hope to hear a reply soon.

C. Robert O’Dell, Vanderbilt University, Physics and Astronomy Department, replied to me:
"This object is a proplyd (protoplanetary disk) seen edge-on against the
background light from the nebula. It is included in the discussion within
a review article I have written 2001 Annual Reviews of Astronomy and
Astrophysics, vol. 39, p. 99. It is also discussed in a layman-audience
book "The Orion Nebula: Where Stars are Born" 2003 C. R. O'Dell, Harvard University Press-available in bookstores and Amazon."

Greg,
Here is the link to the hubble web site, showing the same protoplanetary disk. On the full Apod Image it looks like dirt on computer screen. When you zoom in it looks more like an aircraft kinda thing.
