Need help finding an image (found: APOD 24 Mar 2006)

Greetings and Salutations, all!

I need your help in finding an image. I had saved it to my computer and made it my background, and I loved looking at this APOD image every day -- it was simply one of the most beautiful things I'd ever seen. However, last night, my hard-disk went to the big super-computer in the sky, and I lost all kinds of files. My background was one of those things.

The image is of a nebula (I think -- I could be wrong) and it has every color of the rainbow in it, across the image, with purples and blues on the outside, and reds more to the center. I have this vague memory that it was called the "Rainbow Nebula" -- however, that cannot be it, because I've searched the archives for "rainbow" (0 entires) and then all entries with "nebula" in the name.

I started enjoying APOD in 2005, and I think the image came from that year.

Can anyone help me find this image? My computer (new hard disk later) just doesn't look right without it!

Thanks for taking the time to look, but no, that's not it. It was truely every color of the rainbow, and had veils of gas or dust clouds throughout.

I know it's a little laborious, but, if you're sure it's APOD, you could
try : http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/calendar/ca0501.html and
click on "Next Month" if you don't see your image on January's page.
Only 26, or 27 pages to scan. That's not too bad.

The hard part, of matching the OP's description, is "with purples and blues on the outside, and reds more to the center". Most planetary nebulae are displayed with reds on the outside and blues in the middle (though there are some nice ones with greens and blues, they lack reds, esp in the centre). Images of other nebulae - emission, reflection, galaxies - also tend not to have this kind of systematic distribution of colour.

But perhaps this is it: The Egg Nebula in Polarized Light?

In general, images in polarised light tend to have rainbow colour distributions (and there are a few others, in APOD, such as The Boomerang Nebula).

And I must say that it was no laborious task at all! 2005-6 were great years for APOD!

I guess I'd been looking at it for so long, I'd forgotten how to "see" it! Also, why I remembered "Rosette" as "Rainbow" is quite beyond me!

Thank you all for your help -- it's so comforting to have that as my background again -- makes the situation seem less dire, somehow.

All the images you shared were gorgeous -- if/when I get tired of the Rosette Nebula, I have lots of wonderful choices awaiting me!

Well, IMHO, it's the perfect background because it has all the colors of the rainbow in those pleasing swirls, and that wonderful purple-black center!
