pretty bright, not as clear as the image you posted but still obvious once your eyes are accustomed. Its a fantastic sight

I must say that today's (Oct 16th) APOD is my all-time favorite. It's abolutely stunning, and *begs* to be a poster on my wall. Does anyone know where I could get a print of this fabulous image?

It was seeing a picture of the surface of Europa that got me started looking at APOD everyday! I used it as my wallpaper for many years.

I’d also like some help finding one of my all time favorite pictures… I thought it was an APOD but I can’t find it doing a search… It’s an extremely tall, vertical shot from one of our exploring spacecrafts and if I remember the orientation correctly, Jupiter and its moons are near the top of the frame and Earth and our moon are in the bottom of the frame. Does anyone know where I can see/save this one again?

Cool, that was very informative, but they forgot Uranus. Figure it's about the same size as Neptune.

I use a slide show of these as a screensaver, many of which have been apod's.

That was a tempting second for me. Just think about it...a picture from the back side of Saturn. And it's photographically magnificent to boot! I switched to a new widescreen monitor recently, but I knew before I even bought it what my background would be.

However, for it's beauty and all it represents on an uncountable number of levels, my favorite from the moment I saw it is Earthrise:

I recently bought a DVD slideshow of photos of/ from space called 'Out There' and it's great - I put it on my tv when I'm not actively watching it (I bought it from panoramica.com but I think you can get it on amazon)

That is quite a sight on those occasions when the two bodies appear in such a close proximity. Or any other eye visible planet and the moon. What makes Venus so special though (IMO) is that when the two are SO close, and Venus is at its current mag. -4.6 (or so) you can locate Venus and see it in the day time. I have a nice picture of her taken at 10:00 am during one of the last conjunctions.

and re: the earthrise pic, why wasn't it featured in it's original orientation? Which is, I believe, rotated 90 degrees right? A great pic, nonetheless.....

That's my favorite one as well.

There's another that bears special meaning to me. When I saw a sun pillar one evening, I didn't know what I was looking at. Within a couple of days, a picture of one was the APOD, and I recognized what I had seen. Sometime later, I met Professor Nemiroff when he gave a lecture in Princeton and told him of this. He said that the photographer didn't know what it was either when the picture was taken.

earthrise is a deep and beautiful image, and horse head nebula is fantastic, and I think possibly the most beautiful, (at least the one with all the splashy colors) but my favorite is the one on the tesseract

I love its description. "three dimensional drawing of a four dimensional depiction of a five dimensional cube" I'd like to see a two dimensional drawing of a three dimensional representation of a four dimensional cube. Can you even do that?

I started speculating about a science fiction story as soon as I saw the picture.
