For physics questions and topics not appropriate for this forum, what other forums exist that would be appropriate?

Used to be a time that the Asterisk CAFE forum was the place for any question ... but that has turned into a PORN spammers paradise and has become unuseable.

Q) To what extent can a forum be posted to before it becomes unuseable?

Currently Asterisk Cafe is receiving PORN posts at a rate of one new link every 3 seconds. That, given the fact that it is receiving 4 new posts every minute that have 5-6 different porn site links contained in each.

That is most unfortunate. As a layman, I seek forums where I can pose and discuss serious questions I have about physics, astrophysics, and other science and math topics.

You could try a search for forums such as you seek. There are many, some are new, and a few are old, and some are now gone.

truly a tragedyabout the main site
Yet if true then CHEERS :P :P :P
to the moderators of our little corner
I used to use the MSN groups for chat about space but they became a payed service to eliminate porn spammers. no I did not quit because of the porn block but my group fell apart as no one wanted to pay for chat. and I do not blame them, but I have noticed some small resurgence in the groups there, if you seek like minded subject matter

I could uncover forums using Google, but what I also seek are testimonials of which are good and which are bad. Moderated forums tend to be the best.

BET on it that if the forum has a "pseudoscience" section then they are going to be very closed minded to anything outside of the "box".

Many forums have moderators and posters that "guide" the discussions into side tracked issues that don't even apply to the topic.

My opinion of most all forums is that they are information aquisition and control agendas for "them".

That may be, but any discussion that stays on the straight and narrow is usually the best. I am more interested in what mainstream science say on any given topic.

Physics Forums would likely meet your needs, RJ Emery: it's moderated, there are quite a few professional scientists who are regular contributors (and even moderators), they have a clear policy with regard to what is science and what is not*, and they even have a homework help section (with many high school, college, and university teachers and lecturers as Homework Helpers).

*One unique feature of this website is its Independent Research section: folk who have developed some new idea in physics are welcome to submit it; as long as it meets certain minimum, non-onerous, standards, it will be accepted, for open review by all.

Nereid,

Physicsforums.com looks very promising, and I thank you for bringing it to my attention.
