APOD: Milky Way Over Tunisia (2024 Aug 05)

Post by APOD Robot » Mon Aug 05, 2024 4:06 am

Image Milky Way Over Tunisia

Explanation: That's no moon. On the ground, that's the Lars Homestead in Tunisia. And that's not just any galaxy. That's the central band of our own Milky Way galaxy. Last, that's not just any meteor. It is a bright fireball likely from last year's Perseids meteor shower. The featured image composite combines consecutive exposures taken by the same camera from the same location. This year's Perseids peak during the coming weekend is expected to show the most meteors after the first quarter moon sets, near midnight. To best experience a meteor shower, you should have clear and dark skies, a comfortable seat, and patience.

You can lose a couple of hours following the movie set links from Lars homestead (Star Wars). But, this is a lovely construct IMHO. Sci-fi movies do prod the imagination.

Nice Star Wars trivia. But why is it called "Lars Homestead" in the movies? The Skywalkers lived there on Tatooine, not the Lars family. Wikipedia failed to enlighten me. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatooine for several mentions of "Lars Homestead" but no explanation of the origin of the name.

Did you try just googling on "lars homestead"? https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Lars_homestead

Yeah, I did do that, but lazily (or stupidly!) I stopped looking at the first result, which was Wikipedia. I have to remember that Wikipedia is often not the be all and end all final reference material!

The Milky Way looks glorious in this APOD, but I'm not too happy about the meteor. A bright meteor would overwhelm the light from our galaxy, so the juxtaposition of the highly detailed Milky Way and the bright meteor makes the image look "very composite" to me.
