The Bumps on the Sun and the Moon
Shortly before second contact during an Annular eclipse the opposing horns of the slender solar crescent begin to converge on one another. As they do so, bits of the solar atmosphere can be seen against the dark sky passing along the edges of the Moon. Neither the Moon, with its craters and mountains, nor the Sun with its solar storms and prominences is a smooth and perfect disk.
As seen in the left solar ring image, two small solar prominences located in a perfect spot, accentuated the Baileys' Beads effect just before second contact and the beginning of annularity.
Shot October 14th 2023 from Albuquerque New Mexico with a Lunt 40mm Solar H alpha scope and an ASI174MM camera tracked on a star tracker. The solar disk was processed inverted to show greater chromospheric detail.

The Moment Before Annularity
This image shot with a dedicated H Alpha solar telescope, captured a moment filled with great anticipation. After a questionable forecast all week the morning of October14th, 2023 turned out to be spectacularly clear and crisp .
My image was taken in Albuquerque New Mexico with a dedicated H alpha solar telescope so as to capture the chromospheric detail on the sun.
This is the moment before the Moon centered itself on the the face of the Sun for a full "Ring of Fire" effect typical of an annular eclipse. Dramatic solar prominences and sunspots are all visible in the chromosphere.
Shot under lovely New Mexican skies in Albuquerque on October 14th 2023.

LBN 917 & its friends - or "The Forgotten Nebulae" - as I like to call it.
Why the "Forgotten Nebulae" you may ask ? Simply because these nebulae are located very close to M42 or IC 2118 - Two very famous targets imaged by astrophotographers. On the other hand, LBN 917 and its "neighbours" are rarely imaged. Hence the naming.

NGC 891 is an edge on spiral galaxy that is 100,000 light years across and is approximately 30 million light years away. Just above the galaxy is the Abell 347 Galaxy Cluster. Abell 347 is a galaxy cluster with multiple galaxies but is approximately 240million light years away!

Moon approaching the Sun before first contact of the annular eclipse as seen in a 50mm homemade coronagraph from Comb Ridge in southeast Utah, October 14, 2023 at 9:08am local time (15:08UT). South is up. On the right is the Sun behind the cone of the coronagraph. On the left is the Moon in front of the solar E-corona (5303 Angstroms). The Moon is grey instead of black due to atmospheric scatter of the sunlight.

The magnificent New Mexican high desert
At the base of the Sandia mountains in east Albuquerque I met up with my lovely STELA group for our Eclipse fiesta. This was a long planned image made possible by our lovely hosts, the Armijo family, in Albuquerque
This is a composite of unfiltered sky images shot at dawn and filtered images of the sun taken in 3 minutes (roughly) intervals over the next 3 hours. Because the sun was going to rise so high finding a foreground was challenging and the mountains were a perfect solution. Additionally in order to get the whole path in one frame I would have to use a very wide lens and thus have a very small sun.
So instead I shot a 3 panel mosaic/pano for the sun. I used a crop sensor camera, and a zoom lens at 32mm ( roughly equivalent to a 50mm lens on a full frame camera) on a fixed tripod in portrait mode. I set alarms and 2x during the eclipse I rotated the camera slightly westward to keep the sun in the frame. My sun is bigger but it took more work to align up the suns in post processing. The sun images were shot on a non-tracking tripod so you can see the rotation of the moon across the face of the sun.
The Foreground was shot as a 3 rows/5 image panorama as I wanted LOTS of sky. The FG images were shot slightly to the left of the Sun images to get the house out off the frame. But the alignment remained consistent with the mountains.

Whisps of the bright sun can be seen between the caves and crevasses of the moon, an effect known as “Bailey’s beads” .
Normally this is a total eclipse phenomenon, but not always…
Between the horns of each ring, you can see the beads although some well placed solar prominences helped to light them up.
