Unbarred Spiral Galaxy NGC 3981 by William Ostling, on Flickr

Full processing write-up: https://theastroenthusiast.com/unbarred ... -ngc-3981/

This is another image from the telescope live archives. The data supplied was very hard to work with – the dead CCD rows had some sort of glow that couldn’t be calibrated out, so I had to model the irregular glow on my own using DBE and then subtract it out. I’ve also been trying out the new DeepSNR noise reduction module for pixinsight which seems to remove chroma noise from RGB data quite efficiently. It’s pretty cool to look at the full-quality version of this image and see all the tiny background galaxies – I don’t think many of them are in the PGC catalogue, but most of them should be in one of the SDSS releases.

NGC 3981 is about 65 million light years from Earth, but even at that great distance it is considered a neighbour of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. The large stars in the image’s foreground are stars in the Milky Way. Because NGC 3981 is inclined towards Earth, astronomers are able to look right into the center of the galaxy. The bright center of the galaxy is dominated by a super-massive black hole (SMBH). The image shows the vast and delicate-looking spiral arms of the galaxy, which are star-forming regions full of dust. The disc itself is lit up with a host of hot young stars. Some of the spiral arm appears stretched out and misshapen, possibly due to an encounter with another galaxy at some time in the distant past.

ImageJupiter & Venus conjunction by Joel Klinger, sur Flickr

This night between the 1st and 2nd March, Jupiter and Venus were at their closest distance of 2023.
The encounter is only apparent in the sky, since Venus is at roughly 200 000 000 km from Earth while Jupiter is currently 866 000 000 km away.

This picture has been taken from Tours in France and shows the planetary couple in detail (with a focal length of 1800mm).

You can also notice 3 galilean moons (Ganymede, Io and Europe) and Venus clearly appears gibbous here.

NGC 4038/4039 - Viennese waltz in space

For me as an Austrian these are clearly 2 galaxies dancing Viennese Waltz
Astrophysicists consider NGC 4038 / NGC 4039 as interacting galaxies
at a distance of about 75 million light years in the constellation Corvus.
This pair of galaxies is also called Antennae galaxies, named for the long tails of gas and dust they eject.

Dark Clouds of Rho Ophiuchi

ImageDark clouds of Rho Ophiuchi by Ahmed Waddah, on Flickr

Story:

This is a widefield image of the most beautiful region of the night sky with Scorpius constellation within the milky way, the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex it has the most beautiful mix of natural mix of colors from stars, nebulae and dark nebulae stretching to the Ophiuchus constellation. In the heart is Antares, the yellow/orange star, the brightest star in the constellation. Next to it is M4, a globular cluster. We can also see the Blue Horse Nebula, a reflection Nebula lit by Nu Scorpii. You will see that distinct 3 star pattern of Acrab - Dschubba - Pi Scorpii with Antares just 1 hour before the galactic core occupy the same coordinates.

Image was an integration of the 3 panels covering that region and including partial dust from the galactic core. 2 Panels from last Febuary and a panel from last year.

This image features NGC 6188, or commonly dubbed as the Fighting Dragons of Ara. Instead of reiterating the same story over and over, I have decided to process it from a totally different angle and therefore convey another chaotic and yet full of hope tale. The way the frame is posted makes me reminder a surge of black energy emaneting from the bottom to the top !

NGC 6188 is quite a festival of young blue stars, hot red gas, and cool dark dust as depicted on the picture.

Warm regards,
Aygen

ImageThe Desert Whales by Wael Omar, on Flickr
The Desert Whales

My panorama image for the Milky way in one of the most famous UNISCO World Heritage in EGYPT, Wadi El - Hitan.

Whale Valley or Wadi El- Hitan , in the Western Desert of Egypt, contains invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, and now extinct, suborder of whales. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2005 for its hundreds of fossils of some of the earliest forms of whale, the "archaeoceti"

I stopped at the entrance gate of this protected area and start my imaging session to take a very rare image for the entrance with the winter Milky way arc in the sky. So, in the ground of this image there are the fossils of whales which stayed there for millions of years and in the sky, there are the stars that are way from us by millions of light years. There is also this unfamiliar air glow under the Milky way arc , I really don't know what cause this air glow in the sky especially in this dark sky location.

As this area has no artificial light and very far away from city so it’s completely dark , that's why I used my small torch to make light painting for the ground , This was really pain ,exhausting and risky so I put the warning triangle away from my location by 500 meters with flashing beacon to alert any vehicle on the road ( But Fortunately there were no vehicles at all as it’s a very remote place but I put my precautions to save myself from any vehicle approaching my location) .

I run all over the place to make the light painting quickly to avoid blocking the road with my vehicle then I started to put my tracker off the road and started taking the sky images.

Equipment used:

Camera:

Sony A7 III astro modified Ha

Lens:

Sigma 50 mm F1.4

Canon 70-300 mm lens

Tracker:

Star adventure 2i

The sky image is a panorama of 12 images, each is 60 seconds, F 2.8, iso 2000.

Foreground image is 8 images for the same view and same place but with light painting over different parts on the scene, I put the camera away from my vehicle by 500 meters and use the canon lens at 75 mm to have a wide field of view. each image is 10 seconds, iso 3200, F 7.

All images for sky and foreground were taken in same place and time .

Location : Wadi El-Hitan ,EGYPT.

Peering into the faint outer halo of Messier 83 by William Ostling, on Flickr

Full write-up here: https://theastroenthusiast.com/peering- ... essier-83/

This is another image from the archives of telescope live – the spiral galaxy M83. I noticed while processing that this dataset was deep enough to include a fainter outer halo that I couldn’t find, so I wanted to show as much of this new halo as I could. It was tricky to balance the brightness of the core with the brightness of the outer halo, but using some pixelmath tricks in conjunction with HDR and GHS I think I was able to do a pretty good process. Given that this dataset was so good, I did a lot of sharpening to it, so the core and dust lanes are extremely clear! This is about 15 hours of data from Chile.

Big, bright, and beautiful, spiral galaxy M83 lies a mere twelve million light-years away, near the southeastern tip of the very long constellation Hydra. Prominent spiral arms traced by dark dust lanes and blue star clusters lend this galaxy its popular name, The Southern Pinwheel. But reddish star forming regions that dot the sweeping arms highlighted in this sparkling color composite also suggest another nickname, The Thousand-Ruby Galaxy. About 40,000 light-years across, M83 is a member of a group of galaxies that includes active galaxy Centaurus A. In fact, the core of M83 itself is bright at x-ray energies, showing a high concentration of neutron stars and black holes left from an intense burst of star formation. This sharp composite color image also features spiky foreground Milky Way stars and distant background galaxies.

"Crepuscular Rays over Florida"

Phenomenal crepuscular rays were observed this evening over Tallahassee. They were enhanced thanks to the haze in place and when this cumulus cloud moved in front of the sun the show began!

Captured with a DJI Air2s drone about 400ft up just outside of Tallahassee, Florida on the evening of March 6, 2023.
