APOD: Find the Man in the Moon (2022 Jun 12)

Post by APOD Robot » Sun Jun 12, 2022 4:06 am

Image Find the Man in the Moon

Explanation: Have you ever seen the Man in the Moon? This common question plays on the ability of humans to see pareidolia -- imagining familiar icons where they don't actually exist. The textured surface of Earth's full Moon is home to numerous identifications of iconic objects, not only in modern western culture but in world folklore throughout history. Examples, typically dependent on the Moon's perceived orientation, include the Woman in the Moon and the Rabbit in the Moon. One facial outline commonly identified as the Man in the Moon starts by imagining the two dark circular areas -- lunar maria -- here just above the Moon's center, to be the eyes. Surprisingly, there actually is a man in this Moon image -- a close look will reveal a real person -- with a telescope -- silhouetted against the Moon. This featured well-planned image was taken in 2016 in Cadalso de los Vidrios in Madrid, Spain. Do you have a favorite object that you see in the Moon?

Must be new to APOD if this is the first time you've noticed that Sunday's APOD is a repeat.

If you want to astound the audience, find one that isn't.

Finding things to see in quasi-random patterns... always reminds me of this Peanuts strip: https://64.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lse4 ... 1_1280.jpg

On that occasion it was commented that whoever was on the promontory was closer to the Moon, I personally thought that a person on the beach of Cabuyal, Ecuador would be even closer due to the terrestrial equatorial thickening. If I'm wrong I want to know

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen the Man in the Moon delineated that way. And it seems rather selective and arbitrary from among all the dark markings on the Moon.

Sometimes I wonder if all the “Man in the Moon” talk is a worldwide conspiracy to personally gaslight me. I just don’t see it.

Yeah, I find all the lunar pareidolia to be pretty contrived and not very impressive other than as efforts to discern "evidence of things not there".

After Ranulph Feinnes, the explorer/writer fellow, climbed Mt Everest, he said "This is the closest you can get to the moon by walking" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8060649.stm ... I was very surprised he didn't know better than that... https://www.ecuadorecoadventure.com/cli ... himborazo/

Depending on my mood, the conditions, and who might be with me, I may see the old lady (most likely), the old man, the rabbit, the kangaroo (bet you've never seen that!) the other old lady reading, or Lucy from Peanuts.

But sometimes I hear things...like "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon..."
