APOD: A Retreating Thunderstorm at Sunset (2022 Jan 16)

Post by APOD Robot » Sun Jan 16, 2022 5:07 am

Image A Retreating Thunderstorm at Sunset

Explanation: What type of cloud is that? This retreating cumulonimbus cloud, more commonly called a thundercloud, is somewhat unusual as it contains the unusual bumpiness of a mammatus cloud on the near end, while simultaneously producing falling rain on the far end. Taken in mid-2013 in southern Alberta, Canada, the cloud is moving to the east, into the distance, as the sun sets in the west, behind the camera. In the featured image, graphic sunset colors cross the sky to give the already photogenic cloud striking orange and pink hues. A darkening blue sky covers the background. Further in the distance, a rising, waxing, gibbous moon is visible on the far right.

A pretty cloud; but they are very noisy; and scare my dog! Some
times the booms are very sudden and loud and even scare me! :lol2:

It is really tremendous for us astronomers to have a really close-up look at an actual planet! Complex and interesting!

  • Thanks neufer! Yes, an image of this event is certainly worthy of at least one APOD.
  • I see it does respond nicely to heehaw's comment.
  • It also somewhat matches up to this day's APOD caption. It was near sunset, and if you were far enough away, you might have thought you were hearing thunder. And lightning? According to the video you posted it would have had crazy amounts of lightning strikes.

Your link to the Scott Manley video was excellent.
Here's another decent Youtube report I found on it:
