Yet again I find myself working on old data - like so many others, stuck in lock down due Covid 19 ....AND.... cloudy skies preventing any new images of late.

Beautiful fireworks galaxy in southern Virgo

Post by strongmanmike » Sun May 03, 2020 4:01 am

This lovely spiral galaxy NGC 5068, in southern Virgo, exhibits a good bit of star forming activity.
There is also a good spread of very faint galactic cirrus dust across the field, with the brightest section to the left of the galaxy and arcing up over to the right side of the image

Benjamin Csizi, this is your first post here, and it is a fine widefield image centered on M104, which shows off the huge halo of M104 impressively. Several small fluffy low-luminosity likely satellite galaxies of M104 can also be seen in the rich starry field, which also contains many background galaxies.

That's a very fine image and a great first post from you! Welcome to Starship Asterisk*!

Thank you starsurfer! I was surprised as well to see the tidal tail, it is amazing what one can get with only around 4h from the dark chilean sky!

Benjamin,

If you invert and do a very aggressive stretch to you see a tail at the top of the image as well? I would love to see a strongly stretched inverted image of this. Great Job.

Cygnus in False Color
http://www.woodlandsobservatory.com
Copyright: Alistair Symon This is an image of the nebulosity around Cygnus taken through Narrow Band filters. It was taken with a 35mm format CCD camera and 85mm camera lens. The main image is 14 hours of data taken through SII, OIII and H-alpha filters combined using the Hubble Palette. The North America, Pelican, Butterfly and Crescent Nebulae are other mosaics embedded within the main image. These mosaics were taken with a 35mm format CCD camera and a 4 inch refractor again using SII, OIII and H-alpha filters with the data combined using the Hubble Palette. The data for these mosaics was a total of 51 hours bringing the overall imaging time to 65 hours. For a higher resolution image click here

Thanks Mark! I added an overstreched and inverted version of the image on astrobin here: https://www.astrobin.com/lduc0b/E/
There does not seem to be a tail at the top as well... Should (or could) there be one too?

There could definitely be one. I can't see one, but I'm not good at spotting very faint features.

On the other hand, and as for the southern tail (make that a loop), I think it appears to be connected to a faint fluffy obvious satellite galaxy of M104. I'm reminded of all the stellar streams of the Milky Way, which are thought to be the remnants of dwarf galaxies.

Wow, that's a stunning picture! :D

Near an obvious "kink" in the tail, to the left of it, is a small "cloud" that is elongated in the same direction as the tail. Its color seems to be non-blue, unlike the tail. Can the "cloud" be produced by the comet?

Do you know what stars we see in the background? As a lover of blue things, I'm particularly interested in the bright blue star at upper center-right. Do you know the coordinates of your picture?

I think this cloud like image will be made by comet.
The end of tail we can see the same color region.
I will take picture in this morning to check this image again.
