I think we still have a game board somewhere in the house; but I'm not sure about the marbles!

We used yo have one of these;
almost a must; back in the day!
even had a sears catalog! my brother had it anchored
down so kids couldn't tip it on halloween!
My grandparents had one on the farm also!

When I was a kid; (Iwas a kid once; the human kind) The High School football field was just across the street from our home! Both my brothers played and we could watch the teams play from our front porch! there was only a cable fence around the field! What a relaxed atmosphere it was back in the day!

When I see the movie "Stand By Me", I'm reminded of things that happened in my own childhood. In most aspects I was nothing like the boys in the movie, but during the summers when I was eleven and twelve, 6-8 of us, both boys and girls, would take our bicycles and just cycle out into the "outside world", just to see what would happen and maybe look for a bit of adventure. Just like the boys in Stand By Me, we would just strike out on our own and face the world on its own terms.

Once we came to a large field where the crops grew really high. On a lark, we just threw our bikes in a ditch near the field and ran out into a dense forest of thick waving yellow stalks. We ran around laughing, and soon we started to play hide and seek. We really made a mess of the crops, but I never thought about that.

Until the farmer turned up, far away. To say he was furious is putting it mildly. I thought he would kill us. Of course, since I was a girl, he almost certainly wouldn't have touched me, but I really think he would have beaten up some of the boys. We ran for our lives and got away.

When I see the scene from the junkyard in Stand By Me, where the furious junkyard owner chases after the boys who trespassed into his property, I'm always reminded of the raging farmer chasing after us, when we had walked into his field of crops.

When I was a boy; Mom and Dad had real candles on the tree! They were very careful when lighting the candles because it was very hazardous. They were never allowed to burn very long!

I have a vague memory of my maternal grandmother having a tree with real candles up in Dedham, Massachusetts (c.1950).

Some years we got to climb up the Allin Congregational Church's bell tower to watch her older brother, Irving, play Xmas carols on the carillon.
