APOD: Eclipsed Moon and Mars over Mountains (2018 Aug 07)

Post by APOD Robot » Tue Aug 07, 2018 4:05 am

Image Eclipsed Moon and Mars over Mountains

Explanation: There is something unusual about this astronomically-oriented photograph. It's not obvious -- it was discovered only during post-processing. It is not the Moon, although capturing the Moon rising during a total lunar eclipse is quite an unusually interesting sight. (Other interesting images also captured during last month's eclipse can be found here.) It is not Mars, found to the lower right of the Moon, although Mars being captured near its brightest also makes for an unusually interesting sight. (Mars is visible nearly the entire night this month; other interesting images of it can be found here.) It is not the foreground mountains, although the French Alps do provide unusually spectacular perspectives on planet Earth. (Other interesting mountainous starscapes can be found here.) It is the goat.

What is the blue dot to lower right of the center of the photo? A village?

The goat is most probably an Ibex.

What is the object located down the slope from the goat, about halfway between the goat and the village light? Resembles a Bat wing.

Very beautiful image! And capturing the goat was very serendipitous 8-)
Forget the box, just get outside.

I was fooled by Mars this last weekend. Officiating at a stage rally on the moors in North East England, I camped the night before, on site. The moors are a military exercise area, with many 'out of bounds' and unexplained contructions around the camp. As dusk fell, with too much cloud to see any stars, there was a light just over the next moortop. It was yellow enough to be a sodium lamp, and with my binoculars, seemd to show a disc and posisbly a mast under it. Watch ligth of sosme sort, I thought.
But over the next few minutes, it moved! It was Mars, so near that even with a pair of good binos, I could see a disc, even if no details. Although, has the global sandstorm subsided enough for details to be seen on Mars at all? How are the robots there? I can find no reports of conditions on the Red Planet since early last month, when Opportunity was still in hibernation. Curio's activity isn't affected, of course.

A truly lovely picture.

The Sun must have set behind the photographer at this point. I keep getting confused by images such as this. It appears lighted behind the far peaks. I guess that is just from a long exposure. But then what would that light source be? A town behind the mountains?

The Moon, itself, must be a significant light source(...enough to wash out the Milky Way at least).

I've tried- twice- to get a snowy mountain scene illuminated just by the eclipsed Moon. No luck. There's just not enough light. I think what we're seeing here is light pollution. There are no dark-to-the-horizon places in the French Alps.

My wild guess as to what it is would be; a shelter top, such as a sun shade, to keep evening dew off sleeping bags and equipment. Maybe an overexposed came light under it? Again, just my guess. The goat may be keeping an eye on the occupants.

A beautiful picture.

But the Moon does light up the sky behind the far peaks...no :?:

I would say no. A fully eclipsed Moon simply isn't bright enough to do that. I'd say it's light pollution.

In the caption, you appear to have missed Saturn.

In its currently conspicuous position above the lid of the Teapot.

Not only a goat but a little further down the mountain is a makeshift tent and a camp fire. You really have to increase magnification to see what it is.

Lovely pic... but I don't think the Goat is out of place. Even here in Oregon they live in the mountains...Mountain Goats...LOL... I want to know what the BLUE LIGHT on the mountain across the way is... a Camp Site??? Or is S.P.E.C.T.R.E. up to something...

Maybe the goat was enjoying the eclipse....

I was wondering why the bright object about 1/3 of the way in from the right edge of the picture was not worth mentioning. I really like the planet Saturn.
