M86 Group Interaction
Copyright: Mark Hanson
M86LRGBHAsmall.jpg
This image was another experiment using deep Ha exposures of known galaxy interactions, All the exposures in Ha were taken with 3nm filter, no moon and were 1 hour long.

"This stunning image depicts the dynamic and dramatic center of the Virgo Cluster. At a distance of approximately 50 million light years, it is the closest galaxy cluster to Earth and is dominated by the large elliptical galaxies M86 and M84.

However what makes this image special is the addition of 30 hours of narrowband Ha exposures that illuminate blazing filaments of gas that emit in the hydrogen alpha line! These are the product of a collision between M86 and the blue peculiar deformed spiral galaxy NGC 4438. With a staggering length of 400,000 light years, they signify the tempestuous relationship between interacting galaxies at the heart of galaxy clusters.

NGC 4438 is also interacting with its elliptical companion NGC 4435 and both are collectively catalogued as Arp 120 in the Arp Atlas of peculiar galaxies. Another sign of peculiarity is a rarely seen tidal tail extending from NGC 4435. Another point of interest is a swarm of low surface brightness dwarf galaxies enveloping M86. These are currently being analyzed by professional astronomers to help gain insight into the nature of the elusive dark matter purported to exist within the framework of cosmological models."

Thanks to Sakib Rasool for another great description.

M16 Pillars of Creation – Infrared Light - Another point of view

Although NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has taken many breathtaking images of the universe, one snapshot stands out from the rest: the iconic view of the so-called "Pillars of Creation." The jaw-dropping photo, taken in 1995, revealed never-before-seen details of three giant columns of cold gas bathed in the scorching ultraviolet light from a cluster of young, massive stars in a small region of the Eagle Nebula, or M16.

Though such butte-like features are common in star-forming regions, the M16 structures are by far the most photogenic and evocative. The Hubble image is so popular that it has appeared in movies and television shows, on tee-shirts and pillows, and even on a postage stamp. And now, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, Hubble has revisited the famous pillars, providing astronomers with a sharper and wider view, shown in the right-hand image. For comparison, the original 1995 Hubble image of the gaseous towers appears in the left-hand view. Streamers of gas can be seen bleeding off pillars as the intense radiation heats and evaporates it into space. Stars are being born deep inside the pillars.

Observing in infrared light, Hubble pierced through the obscuring gas and dust of M16’s Pillars of Creation. This ethereal image reveals the young stars that are being formed within the pillars. It also uncovers a myriad of background stars that were hidden at visible wavelengths.

Thank you,

This is a fantastic image!

M86 is a truly giant elliptical galaxy, and it is immersed in a huge cocoon of Hα emission. Such a giant shell of Hα is terribly abnormal for an elliptical galaxy. But Mark Hanson's brilliant image demonstrates that the Hα originated from now-disrupted former spiral galaxy NGC 4438. NGC 4438 and M86 collided! Or at the very least, they skimmed each other close enough to leave both galaxies reeling! And look at that twisting tidal tail from NGC 4438!

What a fantastic image! And in my opinion, Mark Hanson has shown us something that wasn't well known, and certainly not widely acknowledged before.
