NGC 6820- A Star Forming Region in Vulpecula (SHORGB)

Copyright Scott Rosen. Website: http://www.astronomersdoitinthedark.com/

Image
High Resolution Version

Also known as Sharpless-86 (Sh2-86), NGC 6820 is an emission nebula and star forming region located about 6,000 light years from us in the constellation of Vulpecula. Shown in the upper right of the image is the open star cluster NGC 6823, a collection of newly formed stars originating from the emission nebula. Most of the stars in this cluster are on the order of 2 to 5 million years old.

Contained within NGC 6820 are a number of pillars, similar to those found in the Eagle Nebula's Pillars of Creation. These pillars are formed when the radiation from newly formed stars pushes on the nebula's gas and dust. Also shown in this image to the right of the main pillar are numerous Bok globules. These globules will eventually collapse to form new protostars.

More image information is available at http://www.astronomersdoitinthedark.com ... c=17&p=592.

September is a good time of year to look for atmospheric optical phenomena (be very careful not to look directly at the Sun). I spotted this very bright sundog on September 3: it had a comet-like appearance.

NGC 2264
final-ngc-2264-crop-sign-1230-x-842_orig.jpg
Brendan Kinch

NGC 2264 is the designation number of the New General Catalogue that identifies two astronomical objects as a single object:
•the Cone Nebula,
•the Christmas Tree Cluster,
Two other objects are within this designation but not officially included:•Snowflake Cluster,
•and the Fox Fur Nebula.
All of the objects are located in the Monoceros constellation and are located about 800 parsecs or 2600 light-years from Earth.

NGC 2264 is sometimes referred to as the Christmas Tree Cluster and the Cone Nebula. However, the designation of NGC 2264 in the New General Catalogue refers to both objects and not the cluster alone.

The return of the hunter

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

www.adphotography-online.com

The return of cooler temperatures has not gone unnoticed in the Alps region in France, and with it, shortening days, but more importantly the return of our beloved winter milky way. If you are a H-emission lover, the winter sky is for you: from the north-american nebula to the Orion belt, it is a feast for your camera. Too faint to be seen with the naked eyes, these nebulas can be enhanced with a special filter or by modifying your camera. Either way, it promises great sightings again this season. I took this pano shot last year in Denmark on Høve strand as an aurora was also making its appearance.

Aurora borealis photobombing the Big Dipper over the smokey Canadian rockies

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

www.adphotography-online.com

In the months of July and August, British Columbia in Canada has known some of its most destructive wildfires, spreading across hundreds of miles and ravaging entire ecosystems. Winds bore the smoke and ashes up high and far away, but mostly to most of Alberta because of the dominant South-west-originated stream. As I drove up to Pyramid Lake in Jasper National park on July 17th to try and get a shot of the much anticipated solar storm, a brilliant display started around midnight, local time, with majestic and colorful curtains spreading across the night sky. As the beams passed over Pyramid mountain, it completely photobombed the constellation of the Big Dipper, passing low on the horizon at this time of night and year. The smoke, very conspicuous in the image, gave me enough time to get the shot before engulfing the whole area. You could easily mistake the aurora for actual flames producing the smoke, a feature that gives a very special atmosphere to the shot!

Sony a 7rII + Samyang 135mm f/2, single shot.

Noctilucent clouds and lightning show

Credits: Adrien Mauduit

High Level's latitude gives the Project Possum team (Citizen science research program) and myself an excellent vantage point to capture not only the elusive noctilucent clouds, but also other great natural phenomena like the aurorae or thunderstorms. This 3-shot panorama was taken three nights ago back at the PoSSUM den, as the flight team was recording NLC's above a thunderstorm. You cannot see the plane, but you can definitely see lightning, which gives another dramatic dimension to the shot. The electric-blue filaments contrast very well with the beautiful gradient of the never-ending sunset! It was surely a moment I am not going to forget anytime soon!

A rare double-looped prominence occurred when active region AR2673 moved to the limn of the Sun on September 10. This was the sunspot region that produced the powerful X9.3 flare on September 6.
