APOD: Perseid Meteors over Turkey (2017 Aug 01)

Post by APOD Robot » Tue Aug 01, 2017 4:06 am

Image Perseid Meteors over Turkey

Explanation: The Perseid Meteor Shower, usually the best meteor shower of the year, will peak late next week. A person watching a clear sky from a dark location might see a bright meteor every minute. These meteors are actually specks of rock that have broken off Comet Swift-Tuttle and continued to orbit the Sun until they vaporize in Earth's atmosphere. The featured composite image shows a outburst of Perseids as they appeared over Turkey during last year's meteor shower. Enough meteors were captured to trace the shower's radiant back to the constellation of Perseus on the far left. The tail-end of the Perseids will still be going during the total solar eclipse on August 21, creating a rare opportunity for some lucky astrophotographers to image a Perseid meteor during the day.

"... image shows a outburst of Perseids...." "a outburst"? It's "AN outburst." Using "a" when it should be "an" (i.e., before a vowel sound) is becoming common, but it's still incorrect. Try reading "a outburst" aloud. There's a slight stop between "a" and "outburst." That's a disruption in the flow of the writing, which is rarely, if ever, correct.

And if you get good meteor images during the eclipse you can contribute them to the Eclipse Megamovie.

From Middle English outbersten, outbresten, equivalent to out- +‎ burst.
Cognate with Dutch uitbarsten (“to erupt; burst out”), German ausbersten (“to burst out; erupt”).

Has anyone ever caught a meteor during a total eclipse in a photo? I can't find anything on google.

I'm estimating that with all the photographs to be taken in the U.S. for this upcoming eclipse there will be ~10% chance of at least one photo of a Perseid meteor crossing the moon during the eclipse. Not great odds ...but there's a chance.
