That's a lovely wide angle portrait of a blue reflection and its surroundings!

It seems probable that the two stars, HR 5999 and HR 6000 (easy designations to remember) were born out of the elongated dust lane where they are now located. At least the dust lane to the east (left) of them is very thick and dark, which seems just right for star formation.

Interestingly, even though much of the blue light that the stars emit is scattered in the blue reflection nebula, the brightest component, HR 6000, still has a negative B-V index, -0.071 ± 0.002 in Johnson, and a tad bluer in Tycho. That is even more remarkable in view of the fact that the star is classified as an A1/A2III star, too. The "III", which means an evolved star, seems very unlikely.

But stars classified as A1 or later do so very rarely have negative B-V indexes. This one does, and it's solidly negative, too, not -0.001 or something. How remarkable!

This is a ~1000 years old Ancestral Pueblo ruin in southern Utah (near Blanding Utah) with the core of the Milky Way. I photographed this on January 28 just at the edge of Astronomical Dusk, around 5:45am. I had about 15min before the sun would impact the core. There was more light pollution on the horizon but not too bad. This was the earliest in the year I have ever been able to photograph the core of the Milky Way.

The structure was illuminated with a goal zero lighthouse micro dimmed to 7 lumens. This was placed about 60 feet away.

This is a series of 14 photos, stacked for noise reduction in Starry Landscape Stacker.

Still life with lunar eclipses I (Painting)

Based on the progress of Earth's shadow across the Moon's face during a lunar eclipse, I played with superficial representations of such events as columnar stacks of 'slices of time' - a kind of temporal tomography. I then extended these chronotactic (time-arrangement) studies to a grouping of banded, sculptural forms. They are opaque: in translation to columnar form the Moon's face is lost to view, except in the cross section seen at the top.
I couldn't resist depicting an eclipse-column as part of some romantic landscape scene. It alludes to the way that ideas that were once new, can become part of the furniture - or ornaments - in our everyday world. Those ideas may or may not be sound.

IC 2118 (also known as Witch Head Nebula due to its shape) is an extremely faint reflection nebula believed to be an ancient supernova remnant or gas cloud illuminated by nearby supergiant star Rigel in Orion. It lies in the Eridanus constellation, about 900 light-years from Earth. The nature of the dust particles, reflecting blue light better than red, is a factor in giving the Witch Head its blue color. Radio observations show substantial carbon monoxide emission throughout parts of IC 2118 an indicator of the presence of molecular clouds and star formation in the nebula. In fact candidates for pre-main sequence stars and some classic T-Tauri stars have been found deep within the nebula.

NGC 2023 "In the shadow of the Horsehead no more"

NGC 2023 is an emission and reflection nebula located in the constellation of Orion, most times seen in images of the Horsehead nebula. We took direct aim at this nebula to try to bring out all of its wonderful detail.

It is 4 light years in diameter making it one of the largest reflection nebulae ever discovered.

The data was calibrated in CCD Stack, with the rest of the processing in Photoshop CC.
