Re: Submissions: 2017 January
Hello,
i would like to introduce my all work on the Moon through some few pictures.
I am interested with Moon geology and soils composition. Not really easy to work on this subjects for an amateur astronomer, just using a telescope and a camera.
I first try to get the colours of the Moon, using a small SCT 6" and a mono camera with RGB filters. With heavy treatments, it is possible to catch the colours of the soils.
This picture is one part of my work :
The very big amount of colours shows the wide variety of the soils. Those colours tell us about the metallic oxides we can find on the Moon.
Elevation can also be useful to understand the history of the Moon.
NASA with LRO satellite have made the elevation map of the Moon. As NASA is really cool, they give this digital elevation Model (DEM) for free.
So, with the Moon DEM, i was able to make 3D map of the Moon. Here is an example :
You can recognize Rima Hyginus, Mare Serenitatis and Mare tranquillitatis.
Being able to make 3D maps of any part of the Moon is really interesting. Many thanks to the NASA for providing us such datas.
The next step is to superimpose the Moon picture on the 3D map.
Here is 2 results :
A close up on Rima Hyginus :
In my opinion, this is really cool result with very common equipment. When i started astrophotography 6 years ago, i did not imagine i will make such things.
A last picture using 3D map. This is Mare Tranquillitatis area with Z values strongly enhanced. Why this picture ? Because Mare which are not the best subject for astrophotographers are much more complex that we should think. 3D map and the enhanced colours picture show this complexity.
This is the brief summarize of a 2 years work. I am quite proud of it and i think it is a good example of collaboration between an amateur astronomer and the NASA.
Clear skies.

Petroglyphs of atacameños tribe.
One night in the Atacama I was at altitude of 3500 meters, among the rocks, which in the past served as shelter from the sun for travelers. Many of them are covered with petroglyphs, reflecting the everyday concerns of the ancient atacameños. On the rocks you can find llamas, pumas, shamans, mysterious mystical creatures and many other subjects. The panorama was taken shortly after sunset. I stood and watched the stars in a small grotto, the walls of which were decorated with a flock of flamingos and a few creatures. These drawings were made over 5,000 years before the Egyptians began to build the first pyramids. It seems that when you touch these pictures you touch the origins of art.
