Here's a photo taken along the Utah/Arizona border at a place call Little Black Mountain Petroglyph site. This was not a place I had planned on photographing that night. But the site I was searching for was just a little too far down a road that felt a little tooo rough. So at the last minute I decided to check out this site. I was quite pleased with with I found.
I found a surprising amount of light pollution down there but not to bad.The crescent moon had just set, it's light still obscuring some of the milky way. These petroglyphs are of an unknown age, but probably in 2,000-1000 year range.
Here's some technical for for those interested!
This is a combination of three separate exposures were taken just minutes apart from each other. I did each one on my samyang 14mm f/2.8 ISO 3200 with a nikon d810a
One exposure for the sky, 30s ISO 3200.
Another exposure to illuminate the rock and the ground for 3min.
And then I did another with some light painting, also at 3200 iso. I should have lower the iso for that one, but forgot! Oh well!
All three blended in PS. To blend the foreground long exposure and the light painted one I just adjusted the opacity in PS to bring out a bit from each.
