I have heard the statistics before, but I do not recall previously having seen this image or any other graphic depicting it visually. Cool. Having seen it, the image certainly creates a hard-to-forget imprint on the brain. imho

It means more now that I am aware of there being so much water and ice in and beyond the Solar System. It might be feasible that, eons ago, a collision between Earth and a large "icy" body could have resulted in there being so much surface water. -- Tom Carroll/Physics/Keuka College (NY)

I wonder if the representation considers the sea's salt or is it just water? :)
Would it be tinnier, then?

When you add salt to water, the volume actually goes down a bit. But either way, you're not going to see a visual difference in an image like this.

I voted 'No' but maybe I have seen it before and simply forgotten, given that I've been a regular APOD visitor since the late '90's.

Not only have I seen it before on APOD, I copied it to my NASA photos folder and use it as a background slideshow on my desktop. It is a wonderful image! Thank you!

To my eye the ball should appear much smaller. It appears to span half the width of the US, isn't that more than 1400 km?
