Sharpless 115 stands just north and west of Deneb.
It is a beautiful object but very faint particulary in OIII and SII with complex structures.

I took this one last friday, 30 april in north of Granada, Spain. I had not been happy with my first attempt to capture the Airglow, so looking away from any light pollution - free area to a second... failure, I found this wheat field in which I could capture a much rare astronomical phenomenon. Due to the rotation of our planet, every day the Sun disappears hidden by the plane of the horizon or - as in this case - the oaks which vegetate on this plane, leaving half the planet in darkness and illuminating the other half. The phenomenon is called sunset, and it is only possible to observe once every (more or less) 24 hours

Pinching The North Star - Syracuse - Unesco World Heritage Site, the baroque façade of the Duomo has been captured. Different architectonical elements can be appreciated such as many external sculptures: Saint Lucia, Saint Marciano, the Virgin Mary, Saint Peter and Paul. Here Saint Paul keeps upon his finger the north star Polaris whilst all the other stars rotate around his hand in a very extreme star trail. The light pollution of the city and artistic lights used to empathize the style of the cathedral almost make impossible to catch the faint light of the stars. A double exposure have been used to compensate for such an extreme contrast that only human eyes and vison are able to catch.

The shot entitled: Moon Trail Behind The Cathedral - Syracuse - Unesco World Heritage Site is a testimony to one of the reasons behind the Unesco site entitlement: “The group of monuments and archaeological sites situated in Syracuse (between the nucleus of Ortygia and the vestiges located throughout the urban area) is the finest example of outstanding architectural creation encompassing several cultural influences (Greek, Roman and Baroque).” (1)
The Duomo was in origin the ancient temple of Athena as can be observed from the Doric columns that are visible along all the northern wall (here on the left of the church). Nevertheless, the façade is a spectacular example of Baroque style. The moon, and Jupiter in conjunction with it, were rising in the east just in front of the ancient entrance of the Greek temple (now a church) that was oriented along the east-west axis. The shot is a double exposure in order to present a more dramatic effect. The spiky effect of the moon is not the result of a filter application (hard and software) but it is a diffraction effect obtained closing the lens aperture at f11.

The towns of the Val di Noto represent the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe. The exceptional quality of the late Baroque art and architecture in the Val di Noto lies in its geographical and chronological homogeneity, as well as its quantity, the result of the 1693 earthquake in this region. Here the ruins of Ancient Noto still stand across the time to remeber us of that terrible event. The spirit of the old city is still there flying among the roads and ancient fortifications.

That's wonderful! It is a fantastic portrait of the central parts of Sagittarius, with a marvelous palette of nuanced colors! And the picture is wonderfully deep, too!

Mars retrogradation loop (partial)

I am french and I hope that you will excuse my poor English.

Since February, I took (relatively) regular pictures of Mars to reveale its retrogradation loop. In fact, the retrogradation started on April 18th and will end on July 2nd. But to have a complet go/back/go sequence (that is a "S" shape this year), the survey must go from February to August. This is a long-time project so I post a partial result with 3 spots on the retrograde way :

It's a hard work with very early wake up so I used a very "light" set-up to do it : a EOS 6D mounted on a tripod (no motor) with a 28-135mm zoom at 135mm, and short exposures (4s) at high gain (6400 ISO).

Note : this is only a draft. The final version will be made with multi-exposures pictures of Mars (45x4s) placed (based on stars) on a better stary foreground composed from long-exposure pictures (equatorial mount), not taken until today because I am waiting for a better weather and very clear sky.

At the end of August, may be an APOD submission ?!?

Fireball over Korission lagoon

A shooting star, a bright meteor almost a Fireball over Lagoon Korission in southwester Corfu, just next to the star dust and clouds of our imagination galactic horse, makes our fantasy galloping, traveling in cosmic star dust and clouds the center the Milky Way.
A stone, falls and burning due to air friction while the reflection looks like something coming from the bottom of the lake ... While to the right of the Fireball we can see a planetary conjunction, Saturn in the "tail" of the star dust of Rho-Ophiuchi while Mars(in Greek mythology Ares) shines like red giant left of the upper claw of Scorpio, and just below Antares(Anti-Ares) is the heart of Scorpios the Scorpio .
I get out to shoot Eta-Aquariids or Eta-Lyrides but a sporadic Fireball is still an amazing capture!!
