Re: Submissions: 2016 January
I'm new and so I've only had a chance to look at a few of these submissions so far, but, oh my!!! If these are the submissions from which new APODs get chosen, I don't know how they ever decide. I wouldn't have set any aside that I've seen so far. Thank you everyone who takes these images. Absolutely fantastic work. Your dedication and results are inspiring.
There are so many favs already, in just the final couple of pages that I looked at. For example:
- Gordon Haynes: Horsehead and Flame Nebula (a fresh, artistic look with a lovely interpretive palette)
- Vargas and Poyal: NGC 6888 (a delicate, rusting palette with blue companionship)
- Stephan Studer: NGC 4402 (an ethereal yet sculptual view of an object I've never seen before)
- Göran Strand: The Bridge to Halo (extreme clarity and a beautiful scene)
- Martin Heigan: Light From Our Fav Star (another beautiful composition with amazing grace and clarity)
- Mara Novo-Leite: Milky Way and Star Trails Over Oregon (a fresh look at star trails [which I normally don't take to] and the Milky Way, an inspired, artistic version)
This post is probably already too long, but I'm leaving out so much that I'm grateful for: the two views of sun halos, the Celestial X, the Orion region images in chocolate tones and softened tones, the annotated map of Orion, Gemini, etc., the Barringer Crater, the collage of planets showing their alignments..........
Thank you again to everyone who is out there doing this work.

A 6 image vertical pano of our milkyway galaxy. This was shot a while ago on 16th Aug 2015 from Tongariro National Park while Jonathan and I were returning to auckland from Stellarfest-15. The image also shows light pollution, air glow and slight gravity waves. The one on right is light pollution and the one on left is light pollution along with air glow.
This is probably the most of milkyway that can be seen from New Zealand at one given time. Being August, this is the time when the galactic core is overhead and is the best time for people to drive out into the dark and enjoy the stars. The milkyway in this pano stretches all the way from the constellation carina (South - on left) to Cygnus (North - On Right)
Never got to process this image. So now that i am on holiday and did not get much to shoot, decided to process this beautiful image. This images shows milkyway all the way from southern tip to north (South is Left) from Eta Carina to the Great Rift.
6 image pano stitched in Lightroom, processed in Photoshop CC
Exif: 60sec, F2.8, ISO 1600, 24mm using Samyang 24mm on Canon 6D, tracked using iOptron Skytracker.
