Paranal before the daybreak
Copyright: Petr Horálek/ESO

In the Chilean Atacama desert, 2635 metres high above the sea level, there is ESO’s Paranal observatory – one of the most spectacular observatory in the world. When you stay there and watch the pure beauty of the Universe on the technically perfect platform of the observatory with one of the world’s biggest telescopes, you just feel that you travel in the future. This moment I had on 26th January 2015 as I was enjoying one of the last night at ESO observatories at all and I witnessed by Milky Way and the bright zodiacal light on the east, which was as intensive as it’s shine was reflected by the domes itselves. In the Milky way, there were visible numerous of emission nebulae. Especially the largest one „Gum nebula“ was incredible for me, because from the Czech Republic (where I am from) is not visible at all. On the left part of the panorama, the center of the Milky Way in Scorpius was just rising, located in the brightest part of the zodiacal light. Just left from the closest dome is bright planet Jupiter surrounded by faint Gegenschein. If you take a closer look, you can count up to three meteors. And faint orange airglow created numerous „flames“ from the horizon, where are also both of the Magellanic clouds. Just priceless view… More and the image in higher dimension: http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/?p=1804

ISS, Mars, Venus, Moon, Jupiter Conjunction at Sunrise between the Fog

07 Nov. 2015 / around 06:00 CEST
Copyright: Giuseppe Petricca
http://www.astrobin.com/users/gmrphotographer/
A 6 shot panorama of the wonderful view that we had this morning from Pisa. The Conjunction of the planets Mars, Venus and Jupiter together with a waning crescent Moon and the ISS streaking across the sky!
Everything framed with a fog bank that was slowly creeping towards my position, and that has reflected the orange city lights, in contrast with the great blue tones of the sunrise twilight in the background.
I used a Canon Canon EOS 700D Reflex Camera with 18-55 IS STM Lens at 18mm focal lenght. This is a 6 shot panorama

The Hungarian Gegenschein
Copyrights: Rafael Schmall

Larger version: http://tavcso.hu/kep/nagykep.php?id=1005559

A rare phenomenon seen in Hungary above the Zselic Starry Sky Park.
This time, even visible for the naked eye. Some of the guests of the Zselic Observatory saw it during the Friday night program.
Luckily that night we had a very good sky - and very good weather. (seeing 4,5 /transparency: 8)

You can see some deepsky object, but the brighter area is more interesting. It is called the Gegenschein, the antisolar point of the sky, where the interplanetary dust seems to glow in the dark sky. (It is easy to see the Spring Zodiacal light to the west one hour after sunset, or the Fall Zodiacal light to the east one hour before sunrise.

I used modified Canon EOS1100D with Sigma 15-30 lens. For mount, one EQ5-GT from the Zselic Observatory served as well. At this focal length, only need a good polar alignment an some patience. In the end, I stacked all the 30 images. Each image created with ISO800 for 300 second at f5. Software used: Nebulosity, Photoshop

LDN 673 - A Dark Cloud in the Aquila Rift

At a distance of about 600 light years from us, LDN 673 is a beautiful dark nebula covering almost a full degree of sky in the constellation of Aquila. The nebula is superimposed upon the thick molecular clouds within the Milky Way. The dust in these molecular clouds scatters the blue light from these stars, giving the surrounding stars a decidedly yellow-red bias.
