APOD: An Aurora Cupcake with a Milky Way... (2014 Sep 09)

Post by APOD Robot » Tue Sep 09, 2014 4:10 am

Image An Aurora Cupcake with a Milky Way Topping

Explanation: This sky looked delicious. Double auroral ovals were captured above the town lights of Östersund, Sweden, last week. Pictured above, the green ovals occurred lower to the ground than violet aurora rays above, making the whole display look a bit like a cupcake. To top it off, far in the distance, the central band or our Milky Way Galaxy slants down from the upper left. The auroras were caused by our Sun ejecting plasma clouds into the Solar System just a few days before, ionized particles that subsequently impacted the magnetosphere of the Earth. Aurora displays may continue this week as an active sunspot group rotated into view just a few days ago.

Very watchable, but not very edible. Hey, 50% isn't bad at all.

Low calorie but highly energizing. Maybe we could call it an "Up-cake?" Too bad it would be "curtain" death to those who venture into the kitchen to grab a bite. (Sorry - I find all puns hard to resist)

Nice evening snack from Göran and I love the green reflection off of the water. Overall the image provides a banquet of "calming" and a "wealth" of tranquility. Thank you for your efforts.

I like the picture fine; but I can't use it as a wallpaper because of its shape! (won't fit my screen) I can't crop it; I'd have to cut too much off! I could just stretch it, but it would be to skewed! I'll just have to pass! :?

It's a great photo :). In its information in the blog in Goran's website it states "It shows a double auroral oval over the city lights of Östersund and the village of Ås". The name of the village intrigued me, being such a very short name. In information that I found in Wikipedia it states "Ås (from Old Norse áss 'ridge') is a locality situated in Krokom Municipality, Jämtland County, Sweden with 1,218 inhabitants in 2010". I have not checked but such short names may be uncommon.

Mmmmm I fancy a cupcake now. Chocolate preferably.

It's correct, Ås (Aas) is a ridge in Swedish, but such short village names are quite common in Sweden. Not far from where I live we have a village called Ö (http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96,_%C3%85nge_kommun), that's short :)

It's a good thing Göran doesn't live on an island. The word "island" in Swedish is "ö". No joke.

Ingmar Bergman, the rather famous Swedish film director, used to spend his summers on Fårö. The name (probably) means Sheep-island.
