Sorry, Beyond! I missed it. I just remember that your computer was no good any more, or something like that.

In any case, check out this video! I know... the cat is Russian (I suppose, since it lives in Russia) and got caught inside the engine of a Russian car (unless the car was a non-Russian make), and the video showing how the cat was freed from the engine (from the suspension, I think) is French. (I think). But then, you can read about the cat in a British online newspaper!

No problemento, Ann. It went back to have it's disc drive re-aligned. As it turns out, there is something else wrong with it and it will be going back to the factory for a complete quality check, either at the end of this week, or more likely the beginning of next week, so you can still catch me missing for a week or so, uninterrupted by a heavy end-of-year school schedule.
So keep an eye out for when i tell my computer; "return to your origin" and -POOF!- i magically drop out of cyber space and disappear for a while.

Your first link gives me a small picture of space, but the British paper has pictures and the article. 'That' cat was very fortunate!

Hmm, I wonder why they couldn't see the flash? Could the video camera's sensor have picked up non-visible light?

It hit the trees first and apparently set some spots to glowing, because as the guy said, you can see the reflection of the glowing in the trees in the water. I didn't think the bright flash could be short enough to be just in one frame, but i guess all the energy went down the wet trees to ground instead of manifesting as light. Maybe Chris has some insight on lightening?

What i really like is the lightening tracks on the ground. You can see how close it came to where they were. And indeed, IF the tracks go farther under the surface then we can see on the surface, they missed being zapped by about --> <-- that much, about one Nitpickers

worth.

The speaker's voice said: "You saw it, and I saw it.." and I went, What? Because I didn't see it. How short was that flash of lightning? Maybe that's how short they are up close.

It's that one bright frame they show. Lightening can be very fast, it seems.

A single strike has a duration measured in tens of microseconds. It will never occupy more than a single video frame. If you're blinking, you'll miss it. If your eyes are blocked by a camera, you'll miss it. It's even possible that the simultaneous concussion of the thunder simply overwhelms the senses in such a way that you're unaware of the flash. I remember watching a strike just 100 feet away, but what I really remember most is the thunder.

It also reminds me of the Arts, with it's nice polished surfaces and design and the fact that you never quite know what's going to pop out where.

Cilantro is repulsive to me. Next time I smell it, I am going to see if it smells soapy or not. Usually I have to leave the room while holding my breath when it's around because it's just so potent. Based on memory, I don't think I have the soapy cilantro gene but maybe I just never stuck around to analyze it.

I've been thinking about getting the genetic test from 23andme for a while but they actually took away the health analysis portion pending some FDA regulatory review and the health portion is a lot more useful than the vanity results like what part of Europe your ancestors came from or whatever. I mean, I'm glad to have the FDA make sure it's all kosher but apparently the process is going to take a frustratingly long time. They also don't provide a sample result to look at so I'm wary of dropping $100 on data I won't be able to interpret in any meaningful way.

My son has the soapy cilantro gene; I (apparently) do not. He has the "can curl tongue" gene, too; I don't have that one, either, though both my siblings and my mother had it.
