All of the latest updates in WinXP and on IE8 is still five years out of date. The javascript probably wasn't written to compensate for IE8's shortcomings.

Yeah, I stopped testing my websites against IE8 a while back. There's no reason anybody should be using that browser. Even if you're still using XP, there are Chrome and Firefox, which are largely standards compliant and can be kept current even under the old OS.

That's the most stable anything MS has ever released! I built an XP system in 2003 and just quit using it this year!

Anyhow, update: It doesn't work in Win8/IE11, either. Clicking on the brightest red spot in Sag, I get, "Sorry. We didn't find any APODs matching RA=327, DEC=21.780000686645508 (radius 3°)"

I don't get any results when I go to that coordinate, either. When I click the bright red spot in sag I get this: http://www.apod.it/?RA=271.5&DEC=-22.875&SR=3

Having viewed this APOD several times over the last few days I've just realised that what I assume are the Sun (yellow spot currently to the right) and the Moon (grey spot currently far left) by the red line (ecliptic?) in the version brought up through the "above heatmap" link both move a little to the left over time, with the Moon's movement being the most obvious. I'm not computer literate but I assume therefore that the JavaScript is keeping information up to date. Interesting.
