Re: Submission Gallery: Lunar Eclipse, 2014 April
Hi everyone. Great pictures of the eclipse!
So, here is my contribution. I traveled to Arches National Park (Utah) to capture this image. I had to carry ~100 pounds of gear on the trail to Delicate Arch (tripods, telescope, ...) which was extremely challenging but totally worth it.
Link to higher resolution: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-dltZ ... pse_v3.jpg
Technical details: 5D Mark II, 24mm f/4. Exposures are 15sec for totality and 1/250 for partial phase.
I did not want to do any light painting, but a group of photographers who was also at the same spot kept illuminating the arch every once in a while, so I had to deal with it. Turns out it's not that bad.
Cheers,
Jean-Francois

Lonely girl in eclipse time
http://www.astronom.cz/horalek/?p=611
Copyright: Petr Horálek After nervous 680km long drive across the north island of New Zealand for some chances of good weather me and my sister Katerina almost incredibly succeded. We found a small field-road next to the main road to Takatiki, where the clouds miraculously dissipated just couple minutes after beginning of totality and we could be witnessed by absolutely stunning views in southern starry sky during the eclipse on 15th April 2014. Perfect timing of the clouds avoided us to see just the total eclipse – the partial eclipse before and after was lost due to clouds. Thanks to the dark sky of this region was visible also zodiacal bridge and Gegenschein just in the same position like the Moon with Spica an Mars. And small bonus – a green color on horizon is very faint airglow.

Title of image
Copyright: Alson Wong This image shows most of the Moon's surface covered by the umbra (total eclipse portion of the Earth's shadow). While most of the Moon's surface appears reddish because of sunlight being refracted through the Earth's atmosphere, the edge of the umbra appears bluish due to the absorption of ozone in the Earth's upper atmosphere. The lower right portion of the Moon's surface is covered by the penumbra (partial eclipse portion of the Earth's shadow).

Blood Moon

I took this shot at a remote rock formation in Utah. I had to combine two exposures ... one for the moon, one for the rest of the scene. Otherwise the moon would have been blown out.

Re: Submission Gallery: Lunar Eclipse, 2014 April
FYI, such images as these should be represented at the June AAS Meeting. Any takers?
----
The American Astronomical Society will soon be having its 224th meeting in Boston in the first week of June. And there is a new first time event: an Astrophotography Poster session on June 3rd that will feature excellence in amateur astrophotography. We invite skilled amateur astrophotographers to come show their work and how they've imaged the night sky in a forum that features the beauty and wonder we all know and love.
Learn more here: http://aas.org/meetings/aas224/astrophotography
We're also doing an urban star party by the convention, and featuring special amateur-oriented talks that day. In general, this will be an amazing program, and as a Board Member of an amateur association in NYC, I can tell you that the Society is doing a great job supporting all of these events.
