Blood Moom

Post by michaelwaltrip » Tue Apr 15, 2014 2:45 am

Hello,
I am told that there is a "blood moon" tonight (in San Diego, CA at least, probably elsewhere).
The cause I understand is a partial eclipse of some sort.
Can anyone give some more information?

I was surprised APOD wasn't on it, but its probably a local phenomenon.

Thanks!

Total Lunar Eclipse.

Mentioned here:

And here:

And probably in the upcoming APOD for today.

Personally, I'm waiting to see the blood moon rise over the east coast of Australia, in about four and a half hours from now.

(Aside: "moom" is a palindrome, even if upside down.)

The red should start to spread across the moon in about 2 hours and recede about 3.5 hours after that. It is only the portion of the moon that is within the Earth's umbral shadow that may (or may not) appear red.
