A giant star in Scorpius

Post by strongmanmike » Wed Apr 02, 2014 3:14 am

The star cluster Pismis 24 right at the center of NGC 6357 in Scorpius is dominated by the massive star Pismis 24-1 which is actually a triple star system with a combined mass of some 300 Suns!

Ultra deep imaging - z = 4.7 by amateurs

Post by avdhoeven » Thu Apr 03, 2014 8:20 am

This is the deepest image I ever made, done in cooperation with Neil Fleming and Michael van Doorn. This image has a limiting magnitude of about 24/25 and in the image a z=4.7 (light travel time 12.0 billion lightyears) object can be seen. Never expected to get this deep imagery by amateur equipment.

I love Terry Hancock's portrait of the Lagoon and Trifid nebulas. The Trifid looks like a stunningly lovely large pink rose wrapped in blue paper, and with a stem of blue stars, ending in cluster M21 at left.

I also love Paul Haese's portrait of NGC 2442. There are very many galaxies in his picture of all shapes and colors, but NGC 2442 stands out because of its fantastic distorted shape and brilliant colors. Note the large, faint halo surrounding NGC 2442, in places mimicking the general shape of the bright parts of the galaxy, in other places billowing like smoke behind it.

Superb!
