IC 410 the Tadpoles
http://www.CoatesAstrophotography.com/
Copyright: Steven Coates
IC 410 an emission nebula about 12,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Auriga. Near the center of the nebulous region is a star cluster ( NGC 1893) and just to the bottom right of this cluster lies two structures that resemble tadpoles. These structures are made of leftover hydrogen and dust from the formation of the star cluster and the "tails" are from the solar wind coming from the stars of NGC 1893.
RGB: 1 hour 18 min Red, 1 hour Green and 1 hour Blue (binned 1x1) using 80mm EON
Ha: 4 hours (binned 1x1) using the 8 inch RCT.
Processed in PhotoShop CS5
Imaging telescopes: Orion 80mm EON (FL 480mm) to collect RGB data, and the Astro-Tech 8" Ritchey-Chrétien (FL 1625mm) to collect Ha data.
Imaging camera: QSI 683 wsg-8

Camping Under The Stars

It's a simple thing that people have been doing since the beginning of mankind, an open camp fire miles away from anywhere with just you and the stars above. It's something I try to do as often as I can, even if there's no camp fire involved.
In this world where technology usually keeps us company, I think everyone should experience this at some point in time. For me it certainly puts life in perspective - so look up and enjoy, it's free for everyone.

The Whale and Hockey Stick

The Whale (NGC 4631) is an edge on spiral galaxy about 25 million light years away. Both the Whale and the Hockey Stick (NGC 4656) seen at lower left have smaller interacting companion galaxies. The one next to the Whale is often referred to as the "pup", and the two together are sometimes photographed together as the "Whale and Pup".

RX J1131-1231: A Rapidly Spinning Black hole in a Gravitationally Lensed Quasar at z=0.658
Multiple images of a distant quasar are visible in this combined view from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hubble Space Telescope. The Chandra data were used to directly measure the spin of the supermassive black hole powering this quasar (a* > 0.66, 5σ confidence level). Mouseover to show the position of the quasar images and the lensing galaxy. Please see http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2014/rxj1131/ for further details.
