The Virtual Telescope Project: animation and spectroscopy excerpt from article:

a very interesting spectrum, collected on 22 Jan. 2014 with the Celestron C14 robotic unit, equipped with a 100 lines/mm diffraction grating. The graph, plotted with RSpec, shows a prominent Si II absorption feature, sitting at about 6010 Angstroms. It shows this is a type Ia supernova. The rest wavelength of such a feature is 6355 Angstrom, so there is a blue-shift of 345 Angstrom. M 82 is also receding at about 200 km/s. From here, an expanding rate of 16,000-18,000 km/s for the supernova shell can be inferred.>>

<<Charles Atlas, born Angelo Siciliano (October 30, 1892 – December 23, 1972), was the developer of a bodybuilding method and its associated exercise program. The famous Charles Atlas print advertisements became iconic mostly because they were printed in so many comic books from the 1940s. My feeble attempts at humor have two main purposes:

  for a vast array of information.

So you are going to send for the Charles Atlas exercise program and build the kind of muscles that makes M82 think twice about kicking sand in our faces?

I googled "muscular galaxy" to get an inkling of what somebody's (e.g., yours) physical stature might be like when they are strong enough to scare M82 away, but the only hit I got that was remotely satisfying was this one. Maybe those scraggly yellow, red and brown formations are some kind of cosmic brawn?

Thanks though, Art! I'll never forget the mental image of M82 kicking sand in our faces with its rude supernova. Where is Charles Atlas when you need him?

(In Sweden there was a guy called Arne Tammer who promised to turn skinny guys into human powerhouses, although I don't remember him teaching male weaklings how to protect their girlfriends from sand-sprinkling beach bullies.)

I like when you provide your own thoughts on things, Art. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the random cartoons and videos you use as visual mnemonics because they seem too far unrelated in most cases, though. They're especially disconnected in my mind because you use a lot of old references. And sometimes you make some puzzlingly vague posts a little too often and I get tired of trying to figure them out and end up skipping them. FYI, as a moderator, putting a whole bunch of random links in posts is also tiresome. I never know when one of you is going to throw a curve ball and link to something inappropriate (sometimes links to images even change into inappropriate things over time). I apologize if any of us admins get a little short with you guys, especially the more active ones. There is a fun side of the forum and then there is a semi-invisible work side to it.
