The large Sunspot Group AR1944 in the last ten years on January 6th, 16:10ut. The M4-class explosion from sunspot AR1944 on Jan. 4th and is expected to deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field on Jan. 7th. A two panel mosaic.

Analemma of the Sun

This Analemma picture of the Sun was taken in Budapest, Hungary with Canon EOS 5D Mk II camera and Carl Zeiss Distagon 28/F2.8 lens.
Standing at the bank of river Danube and facing East you can see some office buildings, the Hungarian National Theater, the Palace of Arts and the Eastern pillar of Rákóczi Bridge. The solar photos were taken between 2013-01-29 and 2014-01-06 at 08:00 the morning (local time), and the foreground in 2013-11-28 early afternoon.

NGC 474 is the huge elliptical galaxy with the numerous tidal tails. NGC 470 is the spiral galaxy next to it, located at the same distance (~100 million light years). The faint, wide arcs or shells of NGC 474 could have been formed by a gravitational encounter with neighbor NGC 470.

As the Solar polar reversal continues the southern equatorial band dominates the surface activity. Active region 1944 is definitely one of the most impressive active regions of the solar cycle 24 to date.

A few minutes after sunset, and just before fog rolling in through the Golden Gate covers it, a narrow crescent Venus is visible above the Eucalyptus trees in the Presidio of San Francisco. Since Venus is already pretty low in the sky, atmospheric refraction spreads its light into rainbow colors (look at the full-resolution version of the picture to see the colors in the crescent).

NGC 660
A fine example of a polar ring galaxy, NGC 660 is over 20 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces. Polar ring galaxies have a large population of gas, dust and stars orbiting the galaxy in a ring-like feature. The image was taken with the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope in La Palma and the new PFIP CCD camera, being the first light image for this instrument.

The Heart and Moon

No, this is not one exposure, but both images were taken with the same camera and lens, with a hydrogen alpha narrow band filter. It shows a number of things. One is the relative size of a common deep sky astrophotography target compared to the moon. Many people think there's huge magnifications involved, it's really about light gathering power... speaking of which, the image of the moon was .03 seconds and the image of the heart nebula was 20 minutes... 1200 seconds, or 40,000 times longer! On top of that, the heart image was "stretched" or brightened in photoshop to be about 20 times brighter than when captured, which makes the moon 800,000 times brighter than this nebula (at least in Hydrogen Alpha light)!
