Haha, I like the radio telescope dance. They are nicely synchronized.

Also, I admit that I still mix up ESO and ESA despite knowing exactly what each is.
Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

I just had a thought that may or may not go anywhere, but what if the 'brains' at the Starship Asterisk* (of which i am not one) got together and came up with an Asterisk* song :?:
It would probably be more 'wordy' with Borrowed music, unless there is a band hidden in the membership somewhere, but what the heck. It might turn out to be fun. Whacha think :?:

But HOW does one drop you a line?! I presume that you are the person who orchestrated the production of this delightful video?
Not that I'm planning on making a video! - just getting everyone together to make it must have been a huge undertaking.

I created an account !
It was easy to get the people motivated, I had a brilliant partner in Francoise and some excellent support from the upper management

Thanks for the vid Scooby, and welcome to the forum. We all benefit from what y'all pros do, so thanks for that too.

Y'all all seem to be in great shape also, with no one gasping for breath. How high up are the observatories where you work?

Bruce

Thanks for the video! So, Francoise is the great lead singer?

I agree with Bruce, you all seem to be in great shape. Do you work out in gyms, or do you stay so long at the wuthering heights of your observatories that you just get acclimatized?

This is another video made a couple of years ago by Scooby at Paranal, for the Fiftieth Anniversary of ESO, sung by Andy Bell from the music group, Erasure
Click to play embedded YouTube video.

Scooby - is there any possibility of you putting the lyrics with the YouTube videos? Mostly for "ESO, ESO, ESO, in Chile, Chile, Chile", which is bouncing through my head but I can't make out all the words. But the Fiftieth anniversary song lyrics would also be welcome.

Best wishes
Margarita

Dear Bruce, Dear Ann,

Paranal Observatory is located at an altitude of 2635m, La Silla at 2400m. So most of the people do not have any problem there, except sometimes headaches or problems to sleep. There is a sport hall and a swimming pool for people who want to work out. Staff members working regularly at the observatory usually stay 8 days up and then go down home for 6 days. People like Simon and me going there for missions from Europe are driven directly up for one or two weeks. No need for acclimatization. You feel it when you walk from the residencia to the telescopes (a 300m height nice hike) but no more than that.
ALMA observatory is much higher: the antennas are at 5000m altitude but the operation facilities (OSF) where people were filmed only at 2900m. People working at OSF are used to this altitude and only employees having passed a high altitude test are allowed to go up to the 5000m level, with emergency oxygen bottles under the seat.

And Ann, sorry but I am not the singer: I have no musical talent at all. I just helped Simon organise this project and filming some parts. The singer is Noé Kains a fellow (post-doc) who just left ESO last month for the US. He has talent and is a great amateur of classical music, opera and choirs.

Now about the lyrics, here they are, written by ESO PhD students and fellows:
<<
In the desert up high
Our telescopes lie.
When the Sun sets at night
All the stars come alight.
We try hard to find out
What it is all about.
There is so much up there
It'd be wrong not to care.

ESO, ESO, ESO, ESO
Ahahahahahaaaaa...
Here in Chile, Chile, Chile
Ahahahahahaaaaa...
ESO, ESO, ESO, ESO
Ahahahahahaaaaa...
Here in Chile, Chile, Chile
Ahahahahahaaaaa...

Let it never be said
That the science is dead
'cause there 're so many stars
Occupying my head.
There is nothing I need
'xcept some black holes to feed,
Or some exo-planets,
And some supernovae.

ESO, ESO, ESO, ESO ...
...

To the stars, to the stars,
our focus is set
and the photons collect
one by one.
To the stars, to the stars,
our focus is set
and the photons collect
all night long.

ESO, ESO, ESO, ESO...

Happy New Year to all of you.
Cheers,

Francoise.

Yes, Thank you from me as well, Françoise. Especially for the lyrics - I can now put words to the tune that has settled itself in my brain!

Like Bruce, I apologise for not seeing your post earlier: I had checked a couple of times just after I last posted (and asked for the lyrics) but then the whole business of New Year and (here in Spain) Three Kings' Day celebrations just put it out of my head as I'd assumed that Scooby had wandered off and not seen the requests.

Best wishes - and do so hope that you visit and post again. I love the videos that ESO produce (not just the musical ones!) and have learnt SO much from them, so it's great to have an ESO person or two on board.

Margarita
