Re: Found Images: 2013 October
Rover feet! They seem rather worn after a relatively short period. Lots of dents and dings and it even looks like a small rock is embedded in the middle wheel.

Mars is a ruff place for footsies, even the shoeless kind. All that sand and gravel and pointy little stones are enough to make anyone's dogs bark, even a rovers. Maybe they shoulda also sent some Dr. Scholl's foot powder

Re: Found Images: 2013 October
A cross post of a photo I've become fond of for one of the photographers at the Flickr stream. I like it a lot because we often get comments from people wishing they could see these larger structures against a real night sky to get a better feel for their size. This captures that nicely while having a kind of natural feel to it. He also has a photo of the California Nebula and Pleiadies. Pretty!

Re: Found Images: 2013 October
Just like Stephen Lehsin, Adam Block has a new image of NGC 520.
It is interesting to compare the two images. NGC 520 is a galactic train wreck, the result of a tremendous collision of two galaxies, where the debris is actually cooling somewhat. That's why we don't see that many young stars in NGC 520. Alternatively, the galaxies that collided didn't contain a lot of "fuel" - that is, they might have been gas-poor. The upper arm, the one that is curved, is bluer in color than the rest of the galaxy, and it also contains many young clusters. The rest of the galaxy seems to lack clusters altogether. The smooth non-yellow populations in this galaxy are certainly made up of intermediate stars, where most of the light comes from A-, F- and G-type stars. The brightest fireworks, the O- and B-stars, have already sparkled and died.
In any case, both Adam Block's and Stephen Lehsin's images are very beautiful, interesting and informative.

Re: Found Images: 2013 October
Sergio Montúfar posted some positively spooky photos to the Flickr APOD group over the past couple of days. Maybe we can avoid using the Witch Head or Ghost nebula this year?
