The Apod mirror site at
http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/~apod/apod/archivepix.html
has its own archived Apods dating back to 16th June 1995. It doesn't have its own independent search facility, but this link
http://www.star.ucl.ac.uk/~apod/apod/lib/aptree.html
helps one to locate Apods under various headings.

Apod Archives on a mirror site
"In those rare moments of total quiet with a dark sky, I again feel the awe that struck me as a child. The feeling is utterly overwhelming as my mind races out across the stars. I feel peaceful and serene."

Unfortunately the UCL site is giving an 403 Forbidden error when we try to access it. The Archive list is still available, but all of the links from it give errors.
Are they getting tired of dealing with all of the overseas traffic over there?

Re: Apod Archives on a mirror site
I've emailed Professor Howarth, who set up the mirror site in 1998 and who still maintains it, to ask what's happened.dkary wrote:Unfortunately the UCL site is giving an 403 Forbidden error when we try to access it. The Archive list is still available, but all of the links from it give errors.

We had corresponded by email only yesterday and he was delighted that the site was being useful - so what ever has happened I'm sure that it isn't deliberate. But - server overload? It could be...
As soon as I find out anything, I'll post it here.

The archive is also available elsewhere. Try the Italian mirror (in US English) http://www.brera.mi.astro.it/apod/archivepix.html

The University of London site is now OK. Prof Howarth said he was editing it last night and 'it is possible that the protections were set wrongly for a time'.
