Looks like a ghost to me, so Casper seems like a decent name

It reminds me of a starfish too, but the reminiscense of cotton is also too strong. So I suggest the name "Cotton Starfish". Since calling it just Cotton Star would be too confusing, and just Starfish, not too fair.astroobiwon wrote:The first thing that came to my mind when I viewed this planetary nebula was sheep's wool, so I think it should be called, "The Sheep's Wool Nebula" or Sheep Nebula.

The first thought I had was "Iceberg". And I was not the first to think of that.

Edit: Here is another image of the same object sans cosmic rays.
http://skycenter.arizona.edu/gallery/Nebulae/NGC7027 ...Just look up for yourself any other image of this object and you'll find that the only one with this arrangement of spots and specks will be the Hubble data. That's because they cosmic ray strikes are unique for each time the telescope captures some image.

What? There are several stars visible in the APOD image. Like I said, most of those streaks are cosmic rays. If you clean them up then you can more clearly see the stars. I "Hubble" more than any of you might expect.Guest wrote:>no galaxies in the image

Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

How about the "Bowtie Nebula"? Or the "Bill Nye in the Sky Nebula"?
Re: APOD: Bright Planetary Nebula NGC 7027... (2013 Aug 26)
I think it could be called the moth or the pillow nebula. Either seem fitting.

NGC 7027 The cushion nebula.
