A friend and I were there today and thought it was starting to open, and I jokingly said it was going to open up just after closing, which was at 5 PM. Sure enough, the corpse flower is opening:

I guess I wouldn't mind seeing one of these in person but I'm fairly sensitive to the smell of death so I'm not sure whether it would send me running away gagging or not. Sorry you missed it, even if it does smell putrid! At least your conservatory is free. The NY Botanical garden is fairly expensive. It costs $20 to get in.
