This image shows the ring nebula together with its very faint halo as imaged by 11″, 12″ and 17″ reflectors during over 100 hours of observation time.

Like other old red giants M57, better known as the Ring nebula, has expelled most of its material in the form of hydrogen and oxygen. At its core lies the white dwarf remnant which consists mainly of carbon. The lighter hydrogen forms the outer reddish envelope while the heavier blue-green oxygen remains about the core. The gases in the expanding shell are illuminated by the radiation of the central white dwarf who’s glow is still 200 times brighter than our Sun.

When we look closely we see that M57 consists of three structures, the inner, bright and most familiar, nebula, which is about 86″ by 62″. This is surrounded by a second fainter halo ranging until about 156″ x 136″ from the central star. Surrounding these two there is a very faint third halo of about 3,8′ diameter. The brightnesses of these three halos differ a lot, the second ring being about 5x (2 magnitudes) fainter than the central ring, and the outermost being almost 5000x fainter than the central ring (>9 magnitudes fainter…).

Observation

The huge difference in brightness makes it very difficult to observe the halos. Using data from a C11 and two 12″ RC telescopes about 40 hours of data was gathered using narrowband h-alpha filters (3 and 5 nm) to lift the halo out of the background noise during a period of over 2 years (2011-2013). The barred spiral galaxy IC 1296 is also visible in the upper part of the image. IC 1296 distance is estimated to be 220 million light years.

This image was done as a collaboration by myself, Terry Hancock in Michigan, USA, Fred Herrmann from Alabama, USA, Mike van den Berg from the Netherlands and Mathijn Ippel from the Netherlands.

André: Celestron C11 with SXV-H9
Fred: Astro-tech 12″ RC with SBIG STT-8300
Terry: Astro-tech 12″ RC with QHY-9
Mathijn: Planewave 12,5″ with SBIG ST-11000
Mike: Planewave 17″ with SBIG ST-11000

Total exposures used:

H-alpha 1800s: 40x (André), 20x (Terry), 36x (Mike), 3600s: 4x (André), 5x (Fred)
RGB Red 16x 10 min (Terry), 11x 30 min (Mathijn), Green 12 x 10 min (Terry), 11x 30 min (Mathijn), Blue 11x 10 min (Terry), 9x 30 min (Mathijn)
Luminance 8x 15 min (Terry), 39x 30 min (Mike)

Total exposure time: 104 hours

The inner halo around M57 was only discovered in 1935 by J.C. Duncan using a 30 min image with the 2,5 m Hooker telescope.
The outer most halo was only discovered in 1987 using a telescope in Mexico.

This image shows what can be done be amateurs nowadays compared to the multi-billion Hubble Telescope combined with the 8.2 m Subaru telescope in Hawaii. It clearly shows what progress astrophotography has made in the past decades, if you consider that the outer halo wasn't observed before 1987...

This year, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Little Prince. This is a good occasion to pay a tribute to his father Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He published this book for the first time in april 1943. Only one year after he died in the crash of his P-38 lightning.
That's why this winter I took this Little Prince with me in Norway to take this photo under the wonderfull northern lights.

The Other Hubble Ultra Deep Field

From 2012, not sure if there will ever be another filter used so that a color image can be generated. This one is about 1 arcminute southeast of the original UDF from 2009. There's a few different sizes available on Flickr if anyone wants a closer look.

Was this a Super Moon?

This picture shows Sun and Moon taken with the same optics at few hours of distance: the picture of the Sun was taken in the morning of the solstice day, while the picture of the almost full Moon was taken the day after in the evening, 42 hours later, when it was 99.5% illuminated and few hours before perigee.
It can be seen how the apparent Moon diameter is larger, compared to the Sun diameter: a noticeable difference when the two images are side by side, probably more difficult to see in the sky without a reference.

Houston moonrise

This is a 37 image composite of the "supermoon" rising behind the Houston skyline.

I wanted to share a different view of the the moon so I decided to do a sequence shot to show the trajectory of the moon rising. In total I stayed over three hours on location taking photos by intervalometer until the moon was out of the frame of my camera.

Taken on June 22nd, 2013 with a Nikon D600 and Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8. All the shots where taken at f/9, but the shutter and ISO settings were modified during the sequence.

Supermoon
I am submitting the attached composite image of the "supermoon," which
I took the evening of June 22 as it was rising over the Santa Rita
Mountains in southern Arizona. I took a total of seven images four
minutes apart at a focal length of 135mm with a Nikon D-300 on a
tripod, then stacked them. Photo data: 1/250 sec., f16, ISO 400

First transiting planets in a star cluster discovered

A lot of buzz from the just-released announcement surrounding the
discovery of the first transiting planets in a star cluster, namely
NGC 6811, and which have been named Kepler-66b and Kepler-67b.

Please find attached a really sweet LRGB result of NGC 6811 taken in
July/2010 in the event it is of interest to NASA APOD and in
conjunction with the breaking story.

NGC 6888 & the "Soap Bubble"
The Crescent Nebula NGC 6888 & more importantly, the very elusive "Soap Bubble" planetary nebula or PN G75.5+1.7 in the lower left corner, discovered in 2007/8 by amateur Dave Jurasevich. Taken with C11 & Hyperstar, 4+ hours of Ha, OIII & BVR filters.

I launched and tracked my camera on a meteorological balloon from Boulder, Colorado to 86,000 feet above the Continental Divide on the morning of June 27, 2013. The Moon can be seen setting in the black sky above Earth's thin atmosphere. In the center of the photo can be seen I-70 snaking up in to the mountains. At the turnoff to Berthoud Pass and Winter Park, I-70 turns South (left) in to the valley containing Georgetown and then up to Loveland Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel.
