Re: The Dragons Egg in Norma - NGC 6164/6165
This is not a planetary nebula!!! It is an ejecta nebula around an O-type star. The only other type is the Bubble Nebula in the northern hemisphere, which strangely is often confused to be a Wolf Rayet nebula. It amuses me that even in the 21st century, NGC 6164 still gets mistaken for a planetary nebula!!strongmanmike wrote:This is a lovely planetary in Norma, NGC 6164 & 6165

Love the outer halo, I think this was discovered in the 1960's by Bengt Westerlund, very few amateur images seem to show it and I believe Don Goldman's image was the first to show it in colour.
Besides Wolf Rayet and O-type stars, other stars that have ejecta type nebulae are Be-type stars, luminous blue variables and symbiotic stars. Also some novae also exhibit nova shell structures. Isn't our galaxy full of amazing wonders? I would love to be able to explore other galaxies from the inside, there are many others with interesting exotic Wolf Rayet nebulae.

Moon over rock formations at Joshua Tree NP
During Wednesday/Thursdays all-night adventure Joshua Tree National Park, the sky cooperated and helped produce a few terrific images. The moon was a bit brighter than I prefer for night shooting, but it did its job beautifully and illuminated perfectly the spectacular scenery. Image Here the waxing gibbous moon illuminated the rocky features near Arch Rock.

Light pollution from Earth and beyond
Light pollution comes not only from here on the ground, but from the heavens as well; in fact, one of the greatest offenders is the moon! On Thursday morning, June 20, 2013, the waxing gibbous moon shone over Keys View of Southern California's Joshua Tree National Park. The city lights on the far left are those of the desert communities of Coachella and Indio, while those on the far right are of Palm Springs. The red lights visible in the far right distance are from the wind turbine "farm" near Banning. The mountains to the center and right are the Santa Rosa Mountains; on the other side and somewhat protected from these lights, lies Borrego Springs, California's only International Dark Sky Community.

Joshua Tree arch
In Southern California's Joshua Tree National Park, two giant Joshua Trees arch across the starry sky and were lit by the bright waxing gibbous moon on the early morning of June 20, 2013. To capture this scene I placed the camera very low to the ground and aimed straight up.
