APOD: Earths Richat Structure (2013 May 19)
Re: APOD: Earths Richat Structure (2013 May 19)
looks like, from the commentary, the APOD moderators have taken this Sunday off and all the kids are here playing in the sandbox of your mind. Long live the imagination

All of the moderators (except RJN) have been on the board today.

Gas bubble. Same thing that made many of the moon's 'impact crater.' Many such bubble sites are found on the bottom of the North Sea.

Good thing Einstein doesn't get bounced for his imagination. Albert said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."ta152h0 wrote:looks like, from the commentary, the APOD moderators have taken this Sunday off and all the kids are here playing in the sandbox of your mind. I wouldn’t put it past some advanced galaxy trekking space aliens to have marked the planet with a “this is where we dumped our problematic DNA experimental upright bipedal life forms series revision H, so steer clear of this planet” sign.
(I’ve always felt a little alien... maybe it's the horse talking)

there is another structure that looks out of place as if deposited there and it is Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach, Oregon state.

<<Haystack Rock is a 72-meter sea stack in Cannon Beach, Oregon. A popular tourist destination, the monolithic rock is adjacent to the beach and accessible by foot at low tide. The Haystack Rock tide pools are home to many intertidal animals, including starfish, sea anemone, crabs, chitons, limpets, and sea slugs. The rock is also a nesting site for many sea birds, including terns and puffins.>>

<<The Horned Puffin (Fratercula corniculata) is an auk, similar in appearance to the Atlantic Puffin; this bird's bill is yellow at the base and red at the tip. It is a pelagic seabird that feeds primarily by diving for fish. It nests in colonies, often with other auks. The yellow bill plate grows before the breeding season and is shed later. They have a small fleshy black "horn" above their eyes. They have a white face with a dark line extending from the back of the eye and red feet.
This species breeds on rocky islands off the coasts of Siberia, Alaska and British Columbia, in burrows, in rocky cavities or among rocks. It winters far out to sea. Feeding areas are usually located fairly far offshore from the nest. There is usually one chick and both parents feed the young. Horned Puffins will return from hunting with several small fish in their beaks. They also eat squid and crustaceans.>>

Conjecture: the result of coincident phenomena. One possible combination of factors would be a volcano with its magma chamber under the surface, hit by a meteoroid.

There is no need for a meteoroid to explain this. Any explanation involving an impact would require that we find shocked quartz and other materials, which are not present. The structure is purely tectonic, regardless of the precise details of its formation.ericeveryman wrote:Conjecture: the result of coincident phenomena. In fact, this structure is an ancien volcano. If you understand french, check this Radio Canada emission : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTTnYRaZ55A
Re: APOD: Earths Richat Structure (2013 May 19)
From the APOD text: "The possibility that the Richat Structure was formed by a volcanic eruption also seems improbable because of the lack of a dome of igneous or volcanic rock."Donald Pelletier wrote:In fact, this structure is an ancien volcano.
