Partial lunar eclipse at the Australia Telescope Compact Array

http://csirouniverseblog.com/2013/04/26 ... on-rising/

Partial lunar eclipse in the morning twilight of the 26th of April (UT 25 April) as seen from the site of the Australia Telescope Compact Array (Narrabri, NSW). The photo features antenna 5 of the array (which consists of an array of 6 22-m radio-telescopes). At the time this photo was taken, the ATCA was observing mm-wavelength methanol masers located in the Galactic plane in the 330 to 345 degrees longitude range.

This picture shows the moon track in the sky during the central part of the lunar eclipse of 25th of April 2013, as seen from countryside; it's a combination of multiple shots: 39 for the Moon (one every 2 minutes and half) and one final shot for the moonlit panorama; all done on a tripod.
Pictures were taken in the countryside of Melegnano, Lombardy, Italy .
The resulting pictures have been simply combined with Gimp: no other photo editing.

Exposure Program : Manual
Focal Length : 50.0 mm
Lens Type : Canon EF 50mm f/1.8

A picture of a lunar halo appeared yesterday, shortly after the Moon eclipse; it as an actual combination of a picture of the lunar halo, with another picture, taken few minutes afterwards, of the Moon, just to show some of the lunar details in the glow: all done on a tripod.
Pictures were taken in the countryside of Melegnano, Lombardy, Italy .
The resulting pictures have been aligned and simply combined with Gimp: no other photo editing.

Picture details:

Lunar halo:
Exposure Time : 1/320
F Number : 2.8
ISO : 200
Date/Time Original : 2013:04:25 22:29:22

Moon:
Exposure Time : 0.3
F Number : 2.8
ISO : 200
Date/Time Original : 2013:04:25 22:31:06
Create Date : 2013:04:25 22:31:06

For both pictures:

Camera Model Name : Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Photographer: Fausto Lubatti
Focal Length : 100.0 mm
Lens Type : Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro

Saturn on April 26th less then 48 hours from opposition its ring are brighter due to the Seeliger Effect and its hexagon northern pole is clearly visible. Also one of its principle moon is visible Rhea bottom right of the image. (Equpment: LX200ACF 12 in. OTA, CGE mount, Flea3 Ccd, TeleVue 3x barlows, Astronomik LRGB filter set.

I increased saturation quite a bit here which brought out the light pollution. Even though this is one of our regular dark sky sites, the city is not too far away...

Saturn's hexagon is a persisting hexagonal cloud pattern around the north pole of Saturn. The sides of the hexagon are about 13,800 km (8,600 mi) long, which is longer than the Earth's diameter. It rotates with a period of 10h 39m 24s, the same period as Saturn's radio emissions from its interior. However, the hexagon does not shift in longitude like other clouds in the visible atmosphere.Saturn's south pole does not have a hexagon, according to Hubble observations. But it does have a vortex, and there is also a vortex inside the northern hexagon.

APOD: A Raging Storm System on Saturn (2013 Apr 28)

Post by Boomer12k » Sun Apr 28, 2013 5:47 pm

We finally had some good, warm, evening weather, and I was able to get out the scope and take a few pictures. I did see Jupiter and Saturn, but the full moon was so bright, I could not discern a galaxy to save my LIFE!!! So, I settled for the Moon, and M13...which I could fairly make out in the eyepiece.

Both pictures are taken from about 20 still pictures made into an AVI video. This is then loaded into Registax. The frames are aligned, stacked, and the best parts of each frame are saved as a single image. Then that image is used in Photoshop, with auto level, contrast, and color...and these are the results...much better, and clearer than my other efforts. Sounds like a long, involved process, but really only takes maybe 5-6 minutes or so. Not counting all the telescope operation and taking the pictures of course, that took about an hour and a half, that session. Just the processing time.

If I did that process with Jupiter, it gets totally lightened up, and is not good, with Saturn it is totally washed out...Deep Sky Objects turn out the best, and the Moon...

I don't have one of the original M13 frames, but they can be "dingy" looking. Processing really clears them up, and makes them more enjoyable.

The Moon features are brought out with a Wavelet function in Registax. The original image is a tad blurred.

My ETERNAL THANKS to Tony Hallas, for the advice he gave me!

All images were taken with my 10" Meade LX 200 GPS, and a Deep Sky Imager 2 Color Camera, on my laptop....from my driveway, in a neighborhood of a city with lots of light pollution, there is a street light 50 feet away or so. And then there was the Full Moon!!! Not too shabby for a relatively cheap observatory.

More great weather coming next week!!! :D
