Circumpolar stars

Depending on the viewers location on earth a circumpolar star is a star that never sets due to its proximity to the celestial poles, the picture above represents the circumpolar borealis (north) and the picture below represents the circumpolar australis (south).

Sunset from a distance

Post by IanP » Thu Apr 18, 2013 10:51 am

This picture of the Sunset over Rottnest Island (25km distance) was taken from City Beach, Western Australia. The Sun is setting over approaching band of clouds (on the BOM radar 40km offshore).
From that distance, clearn and dry air allows to identify the island’s wind turbine, just below the Sun …

Saturn on April 18th, 05:09ut. At this angle the Southern Hemisphere could be seen through the cassini division and much more brightness on the rings due to the opposition effect or Seeliger effect, It is the brightening of a rough surface, or an object with many particles, when illuminated from directly behind the observer. Have you seen it? :-)

In the middle of the spring, we have very "fine" weather. I crossed a large swamp for this beautiful cherrytree & ISS combo. Worth it!

Ten minutes of star trails were photographed over a flowering tree in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The photograph was made of twenty-five 25 second exposures taken with a Canon T2i and a Sigma 10-20mm lens at 10 mm (f/4.5 / ISO 400). Strong winds created the blurring effect of the branches of the flowering tree giving the photograph an impressionist feel. Corona Borealis can be seen just above the tree in this photo.

Aurora Airways

Last month I led two photo tours in Iceland. The weather doesn't not always cooperate in Iceland, but we were fortunate to be able to photograph the northern lights on both tours.

I had already seen many northern lights images shot in Iceland, and I noticed that the vast majority of them were taken at the same spots. So when the aurora predictions were good, I decided to take our group to a special location that would give us truly original northern lights images.

We left late in the evening in our super jeep to visit a remote crash site with an old plane. We brought some extra lights to light the plane from both the inside and the outside, and then we just waited for the magic to happen. And when it did, it was this perfect curved line that followed the contours of the plane. I love it when a plan comes together! :-)

The cold wind that night was brutal, but with a sight like this in front of you, you really don't mind. After a couple of hours we all returned to our guest house with a big smile on our face and with some of the most original aurora shots ever taken in Iceland.

Star trails and dinosaurs.
A stacked photograph of 1 hour of 30sec exposures.
The South Celestial Pole is seen centre, as the Dinosaur "Elliot" gazes toward the stars, near Winton in Queensland, the Australian outback.

Solar Corona
Queensland Solar Eclipse
14th November 2012 (UT 13th Nov)
Composite of images taken with a William Optics Zenithstar II (545mm, f6.4) and Canon 5D MarkII camera (ISO100), with exposures from 1/90th sec to 2 seconds long. For the outer parts, I have also used some images captured with a Pentax 300mm f4 ED IF lens (1/4 and 1sec at ISO100) and another Canon 5D MarkII. Those two imaging trains were tracking on my trusty old Vixen GP-DX mount.
