Curiosity Self-Portrait by MAHLI, Sol 84
High-Resolution Self-Portrait by Curiosity Rover Arm Camera
NASA | JPL-Caltech | 2012 Nov 01
NASA's Curiosity rover used the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) to capture this set of 55 high-resolution images, which were stitched together to create this full-color self-portrait.

The mosaic shows the rover at "Rocknest," the spot in Gale Crater where the mission's first scoop sampling took place. Four scoop scars can be seen in the regolith in front of the rover.

The base of Gale Crater's 3-mile-high (5-kilometer) sedimentary mountain, Mount Sharp, rises on the right side of the frame. Mountains in the background to the left are the northern wall of Gale Crater. The Martian landscape appears inverted within the round, reflective ChemCam instrument at the top of the rover's mast.

Self-portraits like this one document the state of the rover and allow mission engineers to track changes over time, such as dust accumulation and wheel wear. Due to its location on the end of the robotic arm, only MAHLI (among the rover's 17 cameras) is able to image some parts of the craft, including the port-side wheels.

The "Pillars of Creation" are a well known dust cloud and star formation site in the Eagle Nebula.
This video puts together images from five different space observatories, that span the whole of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Makes for a whole new view of this familar sight.

How freaking neat is this? It's 100,000 stars right in your browser. And you can click and view info on a whole bunch of the named, studied stars. Mostly to scale to give you a good sense of vastness!

Note: It doesn't run very well unless you view it with Google Chrome. Not using Chrome but want to see it anyway? Don't say I didn't warn you. It's pretty choppy.

Just call me "geck" because "zilla" is like a last name.

New panoramic image from Opportunity brings this old song to mind

There's a long, long trail a-winding
Into the land of my dreams,
There's a long, long night of waiting
Until my dreams all come true;
Till the day when I'll be going down
That long, long trail with you.

Amazing image of one of the greatest regions of the winter sky! Is the image cropped? I would have expected the field of view with a 14 inch RCOS to be slightly wider.

Yes but only about 50 pixels or so, the scope is a F8 and U16M thats a field about 43x43 arcmin
