While photographing aurora borealis in Abisko National Park (North Sweden), an orionid meteor happened to cross our field of view (and the camera´s too!).

A lovely souvenir from the upper atmosphere.

Spotting The Station

A shot of the ISS flying thru the constellation Canis Major with what looks like a faint meteor. I used the new NASA spot the station email alert and it worked great! I signed up for it on Monday and they emailed me on Tuesday with an alert. I set up to capture it pass overhead before dawn on the morning of 11/14/12 at 5:08am. EST

LBN 460 (Colibri Nebula) - Bright Nebula in Lacerta
LBN 460 is a bright nebula which is seldom imaged. I found a very few images in the internet. This interesting object which resembles a bird is about 30 arc min long and it is situated in constalation Lacerta, very close to the border with Andromeda. This nebula is a dificult object to capture and to process. It needs considerable amount of exposure time. The lonely sharp spike on the left (North) comes from the 5.6 magnitude star 16 Lac (SAO 52512). My friend Emil Ivanov a well-known astrophotographer who first saw my image of LBN 460 mentioned that the nebula resembles the ethereal and delicate colibri bird and he suggests the name "Colibri Nebula"

I have to comment on a few images here. I'm sorry that I don't have the energy to comment on them all. But thank you, all of you, for submitting your great images!

I have to start with Rolf Wahl Olsen, whose image of galaxy NGC 1365 and supernova SN2012fr is spectacular. The color contrast between the galaxy and the supernova is delightful! The overall B-V index of galaxy NGC 1365 is +0.69, a little yellower than the Sun, and the likely B-V index of SN2012fr is about -0.01, about the same color as Vega. But of course, the difference in absolute luminosity between Vega and SN2012fr is... unimaginable. According to Rolf Wahl Olsen, the absolute magnitude of SN2012fr is -19.27. So what's the luminosity of the Large Magellanic Cloud, including the Tarantula Nebula and R136 and all? It can't be that much more than -19.27, meaning that SN2012fr might be shining as bright as all of LMC put together. Wow!

Handy13 also submitted a fine image that brought out the color contrast between the galaxy and the supernova. But Strongmanmike submitted an image where the color contrast seemed to be gone. That is in fact possible. Supernovae type Ia, like this one, grow progressively redder over time.

Leaving the supernova, I must say that Thomas Jaeger (starhopper-de) submitted an absolutely wonderful picture of M33. Note how his picture brings out the smoothness of the rich but faint old and intermediate populations of M33. These populations are yellow in the center and grayish, with a hit of green, further out. On top of these smooth populations the bright OB stars are sprinkled like tiny blue pebbles. Brilliant reddish-pink emission nebulae spout like magnificent blossoms over the face of M33. It is fantastically beautiful.

And while there is no scarcity of M42 images, I must say that Marco Angelini's image is something extra. The combination of wild colors and shapes and stellar rays makes this picture look like the perfect background for a magnificent rock concert, particularly if the picture could be made to sparkle and pulsate. Please note that I mean all of it as a compliment!

Last night I had the TEC140 running on my EQ6 while I was sleeping. Result 11x1800s S2 data that I could add to my previously gathered data. It took almost two months with the sparse clear nights here, but the result I do like a lot...

Exposures:

9 x 1800s H-alpha (4,5nm – 06/10/2012)
12 x 1800s OIII (3nm – 10/10/2012)
11 x 1800s S2 (5nm – 17/11/2012)
10 x 300s R,G,B (22/10/2012)

(total approx. 17 hours)

A few days ago, astronomers from ESO using the CFHT and VLT, discovered a rogue body in the AB Doradus moving stellar group (ABDMG). located at about 65 l.y away (45-100 l.y).
The new body is located at the edge of the group, at about 100-130 l.y. away. According to measures performed with the Keck and NTT telescopes, the body is much smaller than a usual dwarf brown star; it shows a mass between 4-15 Mj and a surface temperature below 100°C.
Named CFBDSIR J214947.2-040308.9 the properties of this body are not known yet with accuracy; it can be a jovian-size exoplanet or more probably a T-type (Tp < 900°C) dwarf brown star of 50-120 million year old. Methane and water have been found in its atmosphere.

Here is a rendering of this orphan body and ABDMG in front of the Terzan 5 globular cluster.
